Modern Family Star Jesse Tyler Ferguson Says He’s Raising His Son ‘Gay Until He Decides He’s Straight.’
Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and husband, Justin Mikita, welcomed their son Beckett to the world 8 months ago. Since then, the dads say they’ve been raising their son “gay until he decides he’s straight.”
Appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show on Monday Jesse chatted to the talk show host about his journey into fatherhood.
“It’s a new person in your life and just like anyone else, you’ve gotta figure out if you like him,” the 45-year-old actor said. “It takes a little bit of time. I really do like him. It’s been a lot of fun.”

While the actor may have been ready for parenthood, his younger lawyer husband Justin needed a bit more convincing. “I was like, ‘You let me know when you’re ready. But I was ready yesterday,'” he said to Ellen.
Thanks to the help of a surrogate and some more convincing, the couple welcomed their son Beckett in July. “The new parents are overjoyed and excited for this new journey as a family of three,” their representative said at the time. Since then, they have been raising their son “gay.”

Explaining what he meant to Ellen, the actor joked that they’ve been singing him”a lot of show tunes” and reading him the Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish (a spin on the classic nursery rhyme book the Wheels on the Bus).
As far as music goes, little Beckett has been introduced to Lady Gaga and Britney to name a few pop icons. “On the way back from the hospital, we played Britney because that was what Justin demanded we listen to- it was Beckett’s first exposure to music.”
All jokes aside, the actor says he absolutely doesn’t care which ways Beckett decides to go. Although he has a hunch it may be the one he has the least experience in.
“Justin and I were saying, we can just tell he’s gonna be such a straight kid. Who knows? He can do whatever he wants,” he told Ellen. “I have a feeling he’s gonna wanna play football. I can just tell. I’m gonna have to learn how to do all those things.”
