Singer John Legend has come out swinging in fierce support of his wife Chrissy Tiegen, who has become a mum for the first time.
From the moment Tiegen gave birth she was under constant scrutiny for her parenting skills. First is was because she left the baby at home while she went to dinner with husband Legend and then she was shamed for breastfeeding while doing a photo shoot- and now her husband has hit back.
Legend also agrees that days after giving birth, Teigen has bore the brunt of parent-shaming from the public. But what about Legend himself? The singer has not received not one single negative comment about his conduct as a father. Not a word was spoken on why ‘he’ left the baby at home to go out with his wife. No questioning or critiquing his parenting skills at all!
Tired of the double standard, Legend has sent off some tweets to highlight this glaring discrepancy and blatant double standard when it comes to new parents. He demanded that if you’re going to shame the mother of his child for being a parent, you should include him in your criticism, too. (See the tweet below).
Funny there’s no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn’t have to take it all. We’ll split it.
Baby Luna was born on April the 14th 2016 and is the first child for the celebrity couple. Tiegen and Legend caused controversy again with the announcement that they had chosen the sex of their child as they really wanted to have girl first time round.
Unfortunately the issue of mum shaming is not relegated to just celebrities. Mums everywhere have been blamed, shamed, and given unwanted advice on how best to bring up their children. The whole issue needs to stop entirely and Legend does bring up an important question: why is it only mums that receive the shaming and blaming?
