Madonna Explains Why Hating Her Outfit Says More About You Than Her

Madonna is no stranger to controversy. I mean this is the lady who danced in front of burning crosses and a black Jesus in her early days. She has never followed the rules nor has she ever wanted to fit in to society’s perceived notions of ‘normal.’

So why are we all up in arms and surprised by her outfit choice for the Met Gala on Monday night? The 57 year old singer rocked up to the event in a lace and leather number by Ricardo Tisci. Her buttocks and breasts were only covered by the thinnest black lace. The outfit was met with harsh criticism from media outlets to fashion bloggers world wide.

Taking to Instagram to address the “ageist” and “sexist” commentaries, Madonna issued a powerful statement about gender equality and freedom of sexual expression.

This is the caption she wrote to accompany the above photo on Instagram:

We have fought and continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world. When it comes to Women’s rights we are still in the dark ages. My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement. The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society. I have never thought in a limited way and I’m not going to start. We cannot effect change unless we are willing to take risks By being fearless and By taking the road leas traveled by. Thats how we change history. If you have a problem with the way I dress it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I’m not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me‼️ As Nina Simone once said, the definition of freedom is being fearless. I remain Unapologetic and a Rebel ❤️ in this life and all the others. Join my fight for Gender. Equality! ??

Madonna then tagged other strong and powerful role models in the industry like Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce to raise awareness for the fight against gender discrimination.

Madonna “remains unapologetic and a rebel,” across fashion and femininity alike. She has always been a rule breaker and a trail blazer. Should that really stop because she has reached that imaginary age of being too old?
