Amanda Seyfried Opens Up About Her Mental Illness
About three in every one hundred people will develop Obsessive Compulsive Disorder at one point in their lives, and Amanda Seyfried has revealed that she is one of them.
The 30 year old Mean Girls and Mamma Mia actress has opened up in this month’s issue of Allure magazine, making it clear that OCD is not a joke.
“It should be taken as seriously as anything else,” the 30-year-old actress said. “You don’t see the mental illness: It’s not a mass; it’s not a cyst. But it’s there. Why do you need to prove it? If you can treat it, you treat it.”
That is exactly what Amanda is doing. She has treated her OCD with a low dose of Lexapro, a widely used antidepressant drug, for 11 years. She has no plans to stop using the medication.
“I don’t see the point of getting off of it,” she said. “Whether it’s placebo or not, I don’t want to risk it. And what are you fighting against? Just the stigma of using a tool?”
Amanda told Allure that she’s made significant progress over time: “As I get older, the compulsive thoughts and fears have diminished a lot. Knowing that a lot of my fears are not reality-based really helps.”
Amanda is treating her OCD with medication and the guidance of a psychiatrist as recommended by doctors for most patients.
If you feel like you may be experiencing obsessive compulsive tendencies, make an appointment with your local GP to have a chat about your treatment options.
