Angelina Jolie Breaks Her Silence on Divorce and Reveals Health Scare
Angelina Jolie has opened up about her split with Brad Pitt for the first time and has shared details of a health scare that left her face partially paralysed.
The 42-year-old actress opened up in a candid Vanity Fair cover story for the September edition of the magazine.
She revealed that ‘things got bad’ between the couple, adding that “It’s just been the hardest time, and we’re just kind of coming up for air.”
Angelina and Brad ended their marriage in September 2016, after 12 years together and two years of marriage. When asked if they were now on speaking terms, Angelina responded that they are committed to the best interests of their children.
“We care for each other and care about our family, and we are both working towards the same goal,” she explained. “We’re all trying to do our best to heal our family.”
The mother to Maddox, 14, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, 9 and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7, filed for divorce suddenly “for the health of the family,” according to her lawyer.
She was very cryptic when asked how her children had handled the split, admitting that she is immensely proud of her brood.
“They’ve been very brave. In times they needed to be. We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing . . . They’re not healing from divorce. They’re healing from some . . . from life, from things in life.”
Angelina opened up about how she dealt with the pain of the marriage breakup and revealed that she didn’t want her children to be upset at seeing her pain.
“I was very worried about my mother, growing up—a lot. I do not want my children to be worried about me. I think it’s very important to cry in the shower and not in front of them. They need to know that everything’s going to be all right even when you’re not sure it is,” she explained.
After a life-changing trip to Cambodia, Angelina Jolie has spent the last 15 years expanding her world, her family, her career, and her image. As well as dealing with hypertension in 2016, Jolie developed Bell’s palsy. Bell’s palsy is a type of facial paralysis that results in an inability to control the facial muscles, causing one side of her face to droop. “Sometimes women in families put themselves last,” she says, “until it manifests itself in their own health.”
She credits acupuncture for her full recovery from the condition.
Angelina admits in the cover story that she is feeling some of the effects of stress or ageing, reporting that her skin is now drier and she has spotted the odd grey hair.
“I can’t tell if it’s menopause or if it’s just been the year I’ve had.” The idea that she could still be anyone’s idea of a sex symbol is laughable to her. But she says, “I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge of my life and my health. I think that’s what makes a woman complete.”
It certainly sounds like she has regained control of her life again after what must have been an awful twelve months for her family. We wish her nothing but the very best.
