Beauty Blogger Huda Kattan Gets Blasted For Promoting Vulva Whitening!
Have you ever looked down at your lady parts and thought to yourself…Gee them are some dark looking lips, I should really lighten them! No? Me either. To be honest I’m just getting my head around the correct order of applying my moisturiser, serum and sunscreen but that’s a whole other post!
Instagram influencer and make up artist Huda Kattan found herself in hot water recently after posting some information on her website under the title “Why Your Vagina Gets Dark And How To Lighten It”.
Clearly she’s talking about our vulvas cause who even cares about the colour of our vaginas, I mean they reside inside our bodies anyway. But we know that she means. What we don’t get is why our vulvas need colour changing in the first place.
Isn’t it enough that we remove every inch of pubic hair that resides on our vulva? Or that we feel the need to pluck, tweeze, wax or laser every other piece of skin that dares to grow hair? Clearly that’s not enough up keep. Let’s add whiter vaginas to the mix!
Our poor labia, both majora and minora, are now in the firing line. Sure if they’re too long we can just trim them back and now if they’re too dark (what does that even mean) we can lighten them.
The Dubai-based Instagrammer says there are some women that worry that the skin on their vulvas could be a bit dark or discoloured.
“We’re busting myths as to why lightening your lady parts with natural ingredients may not be working and how you can actually improve it (if that’s what you want!)” she writes,.
Vagina expert, Dr. Doris Day (no not the 1960’s movie star) discusses some “DIY vagina lightening hacks,” such as using ingredients like lemon juice, yoghurt, coconut oil and egg whites.
Huda also lets women know that it would benefit them greatly if they were to lose some weight down there to help “lighten the colour.” She says women should “reach their ideal weight,” adding that “excess weight can lead to friction, which can cause darkening.”
We don’t even know where to begin with this load of shit! Huda has a massive following and most of them are young teenage girls who idolise her and value everything she says. They will buy her make up palettes and replicate her amazing looks. They will watch how she contours her lips and do the same. So what is she even thinking, by telling women they can ‘lighten their lady parts’ now too.
The mere fact that Huda says ‘lighter is better’ brings a whole other level of subtle racism into play. It tells us that white is more sought after. That paler skin is more attractive. Not just on your face but your vagina too.
seriously pisses me off when people like huda beauty can be successful and have a huge platform to influence young girls and she writes articles about ‘how to lighten your vagina with lemon juice’ honest to god, women like that need a slap. no wonder young girls are insecure. pic.twitter.com/fHx3ZHJFmX

Huda’s team responded to her 25 million Instagram followers with a statement addressing the whole vulva whitening blog post.
“Hey guys, we wanted to address some concern over this topic,” the statement reads. “We appreciate and respect everyone’s opinions on this subject and want to express that we do not feel lightening your vulva (vagina/ lady parts/ VJJ,) is necessary.
“Our goal is to give details for those who may wish to, by sharing expert advice from a leading dermatologist. We’ve seen a lot of harmful DIYs on the internet, so we hope this post provides the best information on the topic and offers safe ways for people to do this, should they wish to.”
They’ve definitely missed the point here. It’s not about giving ladies the better ‘option’ of how to whiten their vulvas it’s the fact that it shouldn’t be an issue to begin with! It’s dangerous to assume all vaginas must look the same in order to be considered attractive. There is no one mould that fits all women. We are different and should be celebrated as such. Influencers like Huda should use their massive platforms to help women feel good about themselves instead of giving them another reason to self hate.
