The gunman who shot and killed singer Christina Grimmie in Orlando on the weekend has been identified as 27 year old Kevin James Loibl from St.Petersburg in Florida.
Police chief John Mina spoke at a news conference where he revealed the gunman’s name as well as saying the killer had travelled all the way to Orlando with the sole purpose of shooting Grimmie.
Loibl was carrying two hand guns and a large hunting knife when he was found. It seems he didn’t know Grimmie prior to shooting her dead on Friday night following a concert at The Plaza in Orlando. The singer was doing a meet and greet with her fans after her performance when the attacker approached and shot her. Her brother then tackled the gunman where upon he shot himself during the struggle. Loibl died instantly, while Grimmie died the following day in hospital.
“Almost immediately, her brother Marcus Grimmie tackled the suspect,” Mr Mina said. “Shortly after that the suspect killed himself.”
Grimmie’s brother Marcus posted a touching tribute to his sister on his Facebook page following the shooting: “Christina was more than my sister. She was a partner in life. A superstar. A goofball. Introverted. And a friend to everyone. Genuinely. But above all…she was my baby sister. She loved the Lord and her family and was always there for me and I honestly don’t know what ill do without her.”
The detectives searched Loibl’s phone and social media accounts to find a connection to Grimmie but nothing has been uncovered yet.
However when the police arrived to search Loibl’s house in Florida, they found a strange note posted to the front door. It read: “deepest sorrow for the loss to the family, friends & fans of the very talented, loving Christina Grimmie. No other comments.”
The 22-year-old singer from New Jersey finished third during season six of the US “The Voice” in 2014, competing on the team of Adam Levine’s. Grimmie had amassed a huge following on YouTube where she connected with her viewers with renditions of hit songs. Many saw her as an inspiration and related to her sense of fun and her easy going personality.
