Neighbours is set to be rocked tonight as Dee Bliss returns from the dead after 13 years away from Ramsay Street!
Bliss’ stunned husband Toadie is left in shock after coming face to face with the wife he presumed had died following the horrific wedding day car crash that saw the two plunge over a cliff edge.
Dee, played by Aussie actress Madeleine West, was one of the show’s most popular characters during her three years on the show but left in 2003 in a move that stunned fans at the time.
“It was my decision to leave,” West said to news.com.au. “The producers were very keen for my character to continue but I’d reached a point where, as much as I loved Dee, I wasn’t feeling challenged by her anymore. I like to think of myself as a character actor and I’d gone into that very dangerous zone for any character actor where you get a bit lazy and you start playing yourself on set.”
Speaking to Whats On TV a few weeks ago, the mum of six spoke about the impact her return would have on Neighbours.
So how does Toadie react to see her standing in front of him?!
“Dee just knocks on his door and says, ‘Hi, it’s me. I’m back!’ It’s not every day your wife returns from the dead after 13 years. Understandably Toadie feels shock, confusion and denial. She looks the same, her voice is the same, her mannerisms are the same. There’s no denying she’s Dee!”
What happens next?
“After the initial huge shock, Dee and Toadie have a day reacquainting themselves, driving around Erinsborough and seeing how much has changed. Toadie does his very best, on her request, to help Dee remember who she was and to fill in the past.”
That’s all well and good, but how on earth does Toadie’s wife Sonya react to this sudden reappearance of his ex?
“Of course she’s unsettled. Toadie reassures her that he loves her and that he’s just going to try and help Dee get back on her feet. Sonya can’t help feeling fearful though, she knows that Dee was the first woman that Toadie ever really loved.”
West studied in America, wrote music, had six children and continued to appear in TV shows and movies following her departure from Neighbours. But she was never forgotten as loveable character Dee Bliss and was plagued with questions from Neighbours fans who had some outlandish theories about what really happened to her.
Speaking to News.com the Neighbours favourite recounted some of the theories to her disappearance.
“They included alien abduction, that she has an identical twin and it was the twin who died in the car crash, that she pulled a Harold and floated off to Tasmania, that she had another life somewhere and was hooking up with Joel (Dan MacPherson),” West said.
The actress says she always knew the producers had wanted her to return to Ramsay street at some stage.
“I always knew that the door had been left open and I’d been approached over a number of years by Neighbours to make a Dee return,” West said.
So how does Dee exactly explain her return after 13 years and where the hell has she been?
“The writers have really done a sterling job in creating a plausible, justifiable storyline for what is essentially a completely implausible story,” West said. “I will say she has hashtag ‘pulled a *Harold’, but don’t take anything on face value, this story gets very complicated.”
WE. CAN’T. WAIT !!
*Harold Bishop [played by Ian Bishop] was swept out to sea in 1991 but returned to Neighbours five years claiming he’s been suffering amnesia.
