Ed Sheeran Quits Twitter After Being Harassed by Mean Trolls
Ed Sheeran has to be one of the coolest, most down-to-earth dudes on the planet, and even HE isn’t immune to horrible people saying mean things just for the hell of it. He has revealed that he has been forced to quit using Twitter due to unrelenting harassment from trolls.
The 26-year-old singer-songwriter told The Sun: “I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that.
“One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-fuck for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”
That’s enough to make anyone upset and anxious. There is very little to dislike about Ed Sheeran — I mean, you can dislike his music, sure, but the guy himself? There’s nothing even remotely controversial or unsavoury about him.
It is thought that the trolling may have come from Lady Gaga’s fans, after misunderstanding something Sheeran was quoted as saying in an interview.
“Lady Gaga’s fanbase read an interview in which they assumed I was talking about her and they all fucking hate. And it wasn’t anything to do with that at all.
“So I think Twitter gets on a massive steam roll of assuming things and then you get in the shit.”
Lady Gaga has defended her friend with an Instagram share of her own. Hopefully, this will call off her ‘little monsters’.
What an incredible talented artist I LOVE ED @teddysphotos deserves all our love and respect like all humans do. I wish all people on the internet would be positive and loving and apart of creating an online community that is kind and empowering, not hateful and mean. No reason to tear down an artist simply because they are on top. Work harder to be kinder everybody. That should be your first duty to humanity.
Sheeran’s Instagram account will automatically generate tweets on the site but he will not be using it to tweet messages himself, nor will he be checking messages or interacting with fans.
The 26-year-old Shape Of You singer said instead he gets his reality checks from close friends and family.
“I have people like my dad who will have a conversation with me. I don’t have to have someone calling me a whatever.”
I’m sure social media users forget that famous people have feelings too. That you can’t just spew hate and negativity into the world and assume that it won’t make any difference to their lives. They are human too, and they read this stuff. It would be hard to ignore unfounded hurtful comments without letting it get under their skin.
One of the most successful, humble and down to earth musicians has spent some time trying to figure out why people hate him. He’s not the first to leave a social media platform after being trolled and he won’t be the last.
But damn, people suck sometimes.
“One comment ruins your day.”
Don’t be that person who ruins other people’s days, famous and successful or not. It’s just not cool.
