Jessa (Duggar) Seewald and Den Seewald welcomed their first born child together on Thursday. The 19 Kids and Counting stars spoke out for the first time about the complications Jessa faced with her home birth in the couple’s home in Arkansas.
During a new interview with People magazine, Jessa talked about being rushed to the ER during her two-day labor as well as speaking on what it’s like to be a first time parent.
“Despite the difficult times my family faced over the last few months, I can’t tell you how excited I am to be a first-time mom,” she explained. “Ben and I can’t stop smiling.”
“Labour is hard,” she added. “It was very intense, very long. Everything was different than I expected.”
Jessa, who gave birth four days after her due date, revealed that although she had always planned on giving birth naturally, she had second thoughts following 10 hours of contractions. “I said, ‘That’s it! I’m done! I am going to the hospital and I’m going to get an epidural,'” the 23-year-old admitted. “They asked me if I really wanted to do that and I said, ‘No, I don’t, but I do.’ I wanted to try natural if at all possible.”
Ben also added that seeing his wife in pain was not easy. “I was trying to keep it positive,” the 20-year-old said. “There were a few times, she was like, ‘I can’t do this.'”
Things turned sour when Jessa began bleeding excessively after the birth and it was her mother, Michelle Duggar, who made the 911 call. “I tried to keep my head, I was awake and alert,” Jessa explained, saying that she nearly fainted but everyone stayed calm as it was happening.
Jessa said she had to undergo a blood transfusion which forced her to stay in the hospital overnight. “I had dreamed about those first moments, getting to breastfeed right away, all that,” she said. “And so when I had to go to the hospital, it was a shock.”
Happily for everyone involved, the home birth resulted in a healthy baby boy who weighed in at 9 lbs, 11 oz.
“Every time I look into this precious little face, I can’t believe he’s really mine! I feel blessed beyond measure,” she tweeted on Tuesday.
UPDATE: The couple have just announced the name of their baby boy – Spurgeon Elliot Seewald. The newborn is named after famous 19th century British preacher Charles Spurgeon.
“He had a big impact on our lives. His writings and his sermons and books are still around today and they continue to impact many, many people,” Ben has said.
