Personal Trainer And Instagram Star Emily Skye Gets Honest About Her Pregnancy Weight Gain!
As one of Australia’s most popular online fitness personalities Emily Skye’s body is her livelihood. The Gold Coast businesswoman has amassed a ton of loyal followers on social media who look to her for inspiration and exercise routines.
With 10 million followers on Facebook and 2.1 million on Instagram the 32 year old has an estimated wealth of $32 million. Her Instagram features everything you’ve come to expect from a fitness trainer- lots of photos of Skye with sculpted abs and toned tummy.
That is until she announced in June that she was pregnant with her first child with partner Declan Redmond. Since then, her feed has changed dramatically! Gone are the shredded torso photos and in their place are close-up, unedited photos of her new body complete with cellulite and stretch marks.
“I don’t care about the fat I’ve gained, the swelling & cellulite etc. These things are not important to me,” Skye wrote on Instagram last month. “I have such an overwhelming appreciation for my body & the human it’s growing.”
I just weighed myself out of curiosity! 😱 – I’ve gained 21kg!!! ⚖️😝 . My pregnancy hasn’t really gone to plan as far as my fitness is concerned. – I thought I’d be able to keep up with my exercise until the end of my pregnancy but that did NOT happen haha! 😝🙈 Due to a long term back problem (I’ve spoken about before) & sciatica I haven’t been able to exercise for the past 2 months as I was just too uncomfortable & it was starting to make my back & sciatica worse. I made the choice to listen to my body & stop. It’s only short term inactivity & there’s always time to get my fitness back later. . I really admire other pregnant ladies who exercise throughout their pregnancy, they’re awesome & I am slightly envious haha! 😝 But for me it just hasn’t been possible & it doesn’t worry me at all! . I get messages from ladies everyday upset about the weight & cellulite they’ve gained while pregnant & I just want you ladies to know that gaining weight while pregnant is NORMAL – some people only gain a little and some gain a lot but it’s all “normal” – as long as your Doc doesn’t have any concerns of course! 😊 . I am so blessed to be able to carry my little girl & I’m so excited to meet her within the next few weeks! Nothing can take away the happiness I have right now & I’m healthy & so is my baby girl & that’s all that matters. I don’t care about the fat I’ve gained, the swelling & cellulite etc. These things are not important to me. I have such an overwhelming appreciation for my body & the human it’s growing. 😃🙌🏼 . Life is far from perfect & doesn’t always go to plan & that’s why I think it’s so important to focus on the good things in your life. Practice gratitude for all that you have & don’t waste time feeling crappy about the things you don’t have. Comparing yourself to anyone else is also not a good idea because we’re all different. . I refuse to beat myself up. I refuse to compare myself to others & I refuse to let these physical changes that some might see as “flaws” take away my happiness & neither should any of you. . 💗 Sending love your way! You’re bloody amazing, don’t you forget that! 😉😘 . . 🤰🏽 #37weekspregnant . .
“I refuse to beat myself up. I refuse to compare myself to others & I refuse to let these physical changes that some might see as ‘flaws’ take away my happiness & neither should any of you.”
Her videos now show a happy and glowing mum-to-be eating ice cream on the couch and rubbing her growing belly. While Skye says she had every intention of continuing her workout regime throughout her pregnancy things turned out a little differently!
“When I got pregnant I thought ‘I’m going to be one of those fit women who trains throughout her pregnancy. I’m going to exercise right up until the end if I can’,” Skye told news.com.au.
“But then in the first trimester I was really sick. I was nauseous and vomiting. I could barely stomach anything and there was no food I wanted to eat that was healthy. I tried to train a few times and ended up going home and vomiting on the way home. I thought ‘There’s no point. Why train and make myself do this, if I don’t feel up to it?’
“I’ve had back problems, even just walking around is hard and my back gets pretty sore. I have to wear a back brace. I only trained a couple of times a week during the second trimester and I haven’t been to the gym in two and a half months and I’ve gained about 21kg. It feels weird. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it. But there’s no point worrying about it.”
Her honesty has been met with overwhelming praise by her loyal fans and followers on Instagram. Many have commented on how refreshing it is to see a fitspo personality totally accept her weight gain while pregnant.
“So happy to see such positive talk around pregnancy and body image. Such an inspiration,” one woman commented. “I love how real you are about pregnancy,” another said.
Skye says part of her role as a personal trainer and motivator is to try and counteract some of the negative body image talk on social media.
“When I was younger I was very obsessed with trying to be prefect. It’s important to show that it’s all well and good to take a nice photo, but that’s not real,” she said.
“We’ve got to balance it out somehow because there’s a lot of fakeness out there. Showing things like cellulite and body fat and stretch marks and me not wearing makeup is important, because that’s my everyday right now. At least other women can look at me and think ‘She gained weight, I don’t feel so bad’.”
