Pink Discusses Raising Her Children In A Gender-Neutral Home

Pink spoke out recently about raising her children in a “very label-less household.” The 38 year old award winning singer has two children with husband Carey Hart, 6 year old daughter Willow and 11 month old son Jameson. The couple are very open about their parenting styles and say they are committed to raising their brood as gender neutral.

What does that mean exactly? What is doesn’t mean is that the kids are denied the sex they were born with. Rather it takes away any assumptions put upon them simply for being born a boy or a girl. Pink isn’t not allowing Willow to be a girl; she’s trying not to assume that Willow will grow up to be gay, straight, bisexual or transgender.

Pink says that identifying as a girl doesn’t have to mean what our society believes it does. Ignoring labels or gender stereotypes as a parent might simply mean allowing your child to play with any toys and dressing up in whatever costume they choose. It’s all about allowing freedom of expression and not pigeon holing your child simply because of their sex. For example when raising a child to be gender neutral you wouldn’t say “boys don’t wear dresses” or “girls can’t drive trucks.”

The mum of two likes to have an open conversation with her children and says she loves that kids are so much more aware and open to everything around them.

“I was in a school and the bathroom outside the kindergarten said, ‘Gender Neutral – anybody,’ and it was a drawing of many different shapes,” the singer recalls. “I took a picture of it and I wrote, ‘Progress.’ I thought that was awesome. I love that kids are having this conversation.”

In fact, just recently Willow went to her mum with a statement about her future. “Last week, Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman,” Pink explains. “I was like, ‘Great, can you teach me how to make African food?’ And she’s like, ‘Sure, Mama. And we are going to live with you while our house is getting ready.'”

“I was like, ‘What the f**k, who are you?'” she adds. “‘Who is paying for this by the way?'”

We love you Pink! Don’t ever change!
