Roxy Jacenko has been diagnosed with breast cancer just three weeks after husband Oliver Curtis was jailed for insider trading.
The 36 year old mother of two revealed how shocked she was to hear about the diagnosis.
“The timing is extraordinary,” the publicist said. “What I have experienced in the past three weeks is the most shocking thing I have ever experienced. I don’t think there is anything that could shock me more now.”
Roxy discovered the lump in her left breast on Tuesday while showering. She was set to have a partial removal of the lump this week but doctors are delaying the surgery as the cancer “is larger than first suspected, so more testing is required”.
It’s no secret that Roxy has had a tough few months while dealing with her husband’s trial for insider trading.
“I reckon I am still in shock from the first hit,” she said, referring to her husband’s sentencing. ‘I don’t think there is anything that could shock me more now.’
Last month, Oliver was sentenced to two years’ jail, with a minimum term of one year, in the NSW Supreme Court for conspiracy to commit insider trading.
Roxy broke the news to Oliver during a six-minute phone call — the maximum time allowed from Parklea Correctional Centre in north-west Sydney. Her husband happened to call her when she was still at the specialist so she decided to tell him then. Oliver didn’t take the news very well and is understandably devastated. “It is not like he can pick up the phone any time, so when he does phone it is for a very short period of time,” Roxy said.
Her daughter Pixie is aware of the news as Roxy chose to tell her saying her daughter is very ‘inquisitive and and sensitive’- however the mum feels her son Hunter is still too young to understand.
‘Pixie cried last night because I said I wasn’t going to come home for two nights because I would be in hospital,” Roxy said.
The publicist, who is the founder of Sweaty Betty PR, says she doesn’t blame Oliver for her health problems but does acknowledge that they haven’t helped. ‘Could this [her husband’s imprisonment] have added to it? You know what? I am not going to say no,’ she said.
Her mum, Doreen Davis was also diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy 10 years ago. Roxy hopes that her diagnosis will encourage women to stay aware and check their breasts regularly for any lumps.
