Retired Labor Senator Nova Peris has named and shamed the man that verbally abused her on Facebook.
Peris, who is Australia’s first female indigenous federal politician, shared the disgustingly vile post which was full of racist comments towards her.
Instead of getting angry and blocking him, Peris instead chose to share the encounter across her social media platforms. Shared under the title #Racism-it stops with me, the exchange has gathered more than 12,000 shares and a massive show of support on social media.
The Facebook user also went on to say he wasn’t sorry about the stolen generation and made some disturbing comments about rape.
Supporters of Peris were quick to jump to her defence posting messages of support like:
“Get educated Chris you are not welcome here with your vile pathetic bitter gibberish get a life.”
“I think this man needs a lot of love. He’s obviously hurting bad to be this nasty.”
So upset are some people that they have started a Change.org petition calling for NSW police to investigate the matter.
Perks retired from politics last week and she has defended her decision to do so: “Until you are an Aboriginal person do not criticise me for the decisions I have made,” she said.
“This isn’t easy. It’s hard. I am an inherited Aboriginal woman with strengths and resilience … I’ve had to endure for 45 years. It’s not easy to wake up every morning and bounce out of bed and pretend that life is fantastic. Because it isn’t. Aboriginal people have no inherited wealth. They have inherited pain.”
