Serena Williams Explains Why Daughter Olympia Will Not Be Celebrating Her First Birthday!
Tennis champ Serena Williams shocked fans this week when she announced her and husband Alexis Ohanian have no plans to celebrate daughter Alexis Olympia’s upcoming first birthday.
Now before you faint from horror rest assured, Williams has her reasons for bypassing the occasion.
Williams and her husband recently revealed there will be no birthday party for their daughter as they are practicing Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays,” the tennis champion said in a press conference. “We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses so we don’t do that.”According to Jehovah’s Witnesses they don’t celebrate birthdays, Christmas, Easter and other holidays because they believe “such celebrations displease God.” According to the religion, birthdays have pagan roots and the Bible “condemns the use of magic, divination, spiritism, or anything like this.”Speaking to Vogue last year about what being a Jehovah’s Witness meant to her, the tennis ace said, “Being a Jehovah’s Witness is important to me, but I’ve never really practiced it and have been wanting to get into it. Alexis didn’t grow up going to any church, but he’s really receptive and even takes the lead. He puts my needs first.”
Now while the decision to not celebrate Alexis’ first birthday is entirely none of anyone else’s business it seems some people are very confused by Williams’ hypocritical take on being a Jehovah’s Witness.
You see, the religion also forbids sex before marriage as well as entering a church of a different faith. Both of which Williams has taken part in.
In her her defence though, don’t we all kind of pick and choose which parts of a religion we will follow? I think what stands out more here and has seemed to upset fans, is the fact that little Alexis won’t be getting a birthday party. Which yes, is a pity but at the same time that doesn’t mean she isn’t a much loved little girl who has two parents that simply adore her! Speaking about motherhood recently, Williams said, “Sometimes I get really down and feel like, ‘Man, I can’t do this, but I continue to work just as hard, if not harder for my daughter. I have more fire in my belly.”
