Sylvia Jeffries and Pete Stefanovic are morning television’s golden couple. The pair met while appearing on the weekend edition of The Today Show and sparks flew from that very first moment.
“My sister and my mum both sat me down after that stint on air with Pete and said ‘Is there something going on? Cos we can kind of pick up on something.’ There hadn’t been anything romantic at that point,” Sylvia said.
Following that first encounter, Pete then got stationed overseas as a foreign corespondent which meant their potential relationship had to be put on hold-temporarily.
But Pete did something which won Sylvia’s heart and has held it ever since. The 33 year old journalist put pen to paper and began to write Sylvia good old fashioned love letters from whichever country he was stationed in.
“The first letter was just nice things, about having a nice time working together, wishing me well and whatnot. But there’s something about a 33-year-old man sitting down and writing a letter and posting it to you — it doesn’t matter what’s in that letter, that is a gesture in itself. In 2016, or 2014 at the time, it is. That was pretty special. It was a smooth move, and it worked.”
Sylvia says writing to each other was “old school and traditional” so when Pete finally moved back to Australia they were ready to live together as a couple.
“I was living with my girlfriends at the time and he moved into the ‘sorority house’ with us,” she said.
Of course being with Pete meant also being with his brother Karl Stefanovic in a round about way. The two brothers are very close which is one of the qualities that attracted Sylvia to Pete. She loved his strong sense of family and traditional values.
“They’re such fun guys. When they’re in their natural habitat — Karl’s garage — they’re so fun. They’re so in love with each other. The three brothers and their sister are just obsessed with each other in the nicest possible way, they’re so close.”
