The Reason Why Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Have To Return All Their Wedding Gifts!
When Prince Harry married Meghan Markle on May 19th the happy couple were no doubt sent hundreds of gifts from well wishers and attendees at the wedding. Unfortunately though, the two are unable to keep any of the presents as that would go against Royal protocol.
According to reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning about $9 million worth of unopened gifts. The couple are unable to accept any gifts a they are considered publicity stunts and royal protocol requires that they be returned. The official rules from Kensington Palace on receiving gifts from businesses say: ‘When gifts are accepted, the consent of the Member of the Royal Family should be contingent upon the enterprise undertaking not to exploit the gift for commercial purposes.'”
Online printing company Bags Of Love for example, sent the couple some bathers in the hopes that Harry and Meghan may choose to wear them on their honeymoon. This may have resulted in the royals being snapped by paparazzi wearing the swimmers and therefore earning free publicity for the company. Which is why gifts like this are rejected under the ‘commercial purposes’ clause.
(We’re guessing however that the swimsuits were NOT the ones pictured above by Bags Of Love!)
Harry and Meghan requested that those wishing to send gifts consider donating to charity instead.
We’re pretty sure the couple have no need or want of anything, so they’ll probably donate it all to some kind of charity as much as they may have wanted to keep some swimmers with their faces plastered all over them!
