The 80’s were all about perms, shoulder pads and fluoro clothing. It was a time when we used to go to clubs to actually dance. When we all eagerly awaited Richard Wilkins to present the latest video clip on MTV.
The music charts were dominated by Madonna, Michael Jackson and Wham! The iconic 80’s group was made up of Andrew Ridgely and George Michael– two school friends from London who managed to produce hit after hit including Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Last Christmas.
The duo went their separate ways after Michael released Careless Whisper as a solo artist. Despite the break up the two remained close friends and Michael went on to become a recording mega star in his own right. Ridgeley on the other hand stayed away from the music industry and didn’t sing again.
A heart broken Ridgeley took to Twitter on Sunday to pay his respects to Michael, who died in London over Christmas.
“Heartbroken at the loss of my beloved friend Yog,” Ridgeley, 53, tweeted. “Me, his loved ones, his friends, the world of music, the world at large. 4ever loved. A xx.”
Michael died on Christmas from suspected heart failure. His rep said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
