A Lollipop Lady Gets Banned From Handing Out Treats

Kindness. The world needs more of it and the only way we can cultivate kindness is by being kind ourselves.

‘Throw kindness around like confetti’ has been a popular quote that has circulated the interwebs for a while.

The quote gets liked and shared because we can all agree that the world needs more kindness.

So what good is involved when we stop someone spreading kindness to others?

A popular lollipop lady who would offer a once-a-term treat to schoolchildren has been banned from doing so after a parent complained to the council.

Kaye Kittelty, a much loved lollipop lady in Melbourne would offer the schoolchildren she’d help safely cross the road, a once-off treat of an icy pole in summer or a pie in winter.

The parent that wasn’t happy with the ‘treats’ made a complaint to Maroondah council who put in place a statewide rule for supervisors not to be distracted undertaking any other activities.

Ms Kittelty was upset the parent didn’t come and speak to her first before making a complaint to the council.

“I was upset, I thought (the parent) could have come to me first and said they didn’t like it and tell me why they didn’t want me to do it.

“The kids get (the treats) themselves out of the bag so it’s not interrupting my work.

“I’m here for the children and the parents and that’s the main concern.”

Safety was never compromised when the treats were offered. Students are now making a petition to allow Ms Kittelty to offer the treats as she had before.

One parent told 7News,“She’s almost like a pseudo grandmother to many of the kids and they all just enjoy rushing up to see her.

“It’s just another example of the councils overstepping their mark and interfering in things they don’t need to interfere in.”

Ms Kittelty will continue to do her job as a lollipop lady and respect the council’s wishes. She won’t let the ruling stop her from smiling and waving at children as they cross the road.

What do you think about the ruling? Should lollipop ladies not hand out treats to kids?
