Is There a Pink Gene?

Why is it that girls are suddenly drawn to the colour pink and become rather obsessive about it. I have twin girls who are four. They have taken to fight over anything pink, it could be a fork, spoon, bowl, pillow slip, pillow, toy, t-shirt, dress and more, and they fight over who gets the pink one.

Why is this so? I was not obsessed with pink as a kid. Is there a pink gene that kicks in for girls and demands little girls be mad about the colour pink? Do you have girls and has this happened or is happening in your household? Well it is an all-out riot at our house about this colour. Damn you colour pink!

As I am pondering the pink colour issue, here are some articles that will help the debate or give you more information:
Why do young girls obsess with pink?
Should we not dress girls in pink?

The second article above mentions that in the 1900′s pink was for boys and blue was for girls. I loved blue and that is my favourite colour and as you would have guessed I was dressed in blue never pink as a kid. Blue was considered daintier, and pink was considered a stronger colour that is closer to red. How times have changed. You walk down the aisle of a toy shop and all toys for girls are pink, no blue can the eye see. Who decided that girls must wear and love pink?

What have you done to help this pink obsession? I do try to have a little bit of pink but also don’t want to only able to wear items that are pink. I try and have them wear other colours as well as pink. What if they are elsewhere and there are no pink anything! This would not be a shock to me, but might be for nearly four year old twins.

I’d love to hear about your thoughts/comments and experiences .

She is a mother to three year old identical twin girls, who keep her very busy. On top of looking after the girls, she is studying for a master’s degree in project management, blogging on her blog “Mummy to Twins”, attempting to keep the house clean and tidy, and trying to fit in some me time as well.
