School Bullying Has Gone to a New Low – A Seventh Grader is Told to Kill Himself in His Yearbook

yearbook bullying

Trigger warning, suicide is discussed in this post.

We all know bullies can be cruel, but classmates to a 13-year-old boy in the US have gone to new lows to torment and bully the seventh grader.

The boy, whose name has not been released, shared his Glacier Middle School yearbook in the school’s lunchroom last Friday so other students could write in his yearbook.

When the 13-year-old received his yearbook, it was filled with horrific, abusive comments like, “You should do the world a favur and die” and “Piece of Shit”,
and “No balls, kill yourself. You won’t.”

He walked out of the lunch room and rang his mum in tears over what happened.

Komo news reported the young boy almost carried out the suicide after receiving his yearbook. Thank goodness he didn’t. Instead, his mum, Shannon Hansen, shared his yearbook on social media, which has gone viral.

Ms Hansen and her son spoke with Komo news to share their story.

The 13-year-old victim said, “I just kind of thought that they were right.”

The seventh-grader believed the words in his yearbook and immediately left school and headed to the river to end his life to ‘drown myself’.

“Just because everybody was being mean to me, and I couldn’t take it anymore.”

Thankfully he changed his mind.

“Because I thought it wasn’t worth it because they’re just … I don’t know. It wasn’t worth it.”

It was reported the family headed straight to the police and a report was taken.

The school district issued a statement about the case,

“We are deeply concerned about the troubling yearbook issue that was brought to our attention on Friday [16th June] afternoon. Our immediate concern is for the safety and well-being of the student involved.”

The picture of the yearbook has been shared nearly 1.9k times and has received over 2.3k comments. Many parents are shocked by the comments left in the yearbook and have offered their support to the mum and son.

Others have offered to buy the boy a new yearbook and fill it with encouraging messages.

But the question needs to be asked, what kind of sick kids would write such hateful words in a yearbook? How have the parents been raising these children?

It’s stories like these that remind us how important it is to keep raising awareness about bullying.

It feels like we are never going to stamp out bullying unless criminal charges are laid against the perpetrators of the abuse.

Only this week, a 20-year old woman was convicted of manslaughter after she texted her boyfriend to kill himself and he did.

In Australia, a new wave of bullying has had horrific consequences to students who suffer allergies.

Children who are known to have allergies are having their lives threatened by bullies who think it’s funny to wave allergens in front them.

allergy bullying

Professor Andrew Fong from The University of New South Wales told 7News, “Some of the things include things as scary as being forced to eat the food they’re allergic to, or people tricking them into eating food.”

So what can we do?

These are no matters to turn a blind eye to. Every child matters.

As parents, we need to be educating our kids on respecting others. Kids need to understand the dire consequences of allergies.

If we find out our kids have been bullying, we need to address it.

Schools need to be vigilant in investigating bullying as soon as they are made aware. this behavior can not be tolerated! It’s an issue we all need to focus on together.

If we don’t, more children and teens will think about taking their life and that is a tragedy because it’s a death that could have been prevented.
