Angelina Jolie has revealed in a column for the New York Times that she has undergone surgery to remove her ovaries and Fallopian tubes after doctors detected early signs of cancer.
She said after undergoing the preventative breast surgery in 2013 to reduce her risk of cancer, she had been planning for some time to have her ovaries removed.
However, she was forced to have the operation sooner rather than later— which has forced her into menopause — when the early signs of cancer were detected earlier this month through a blood test.
“I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt,” she wrote in the column.
“I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn’t live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren.”
