Woman Cancels Wedding Last Minute To Get Back At Her Overbearing Mother In Law!

Woman Cancels Wedding Last Minute To Get Back At Her Overbearing Mother In Law!

Weddings are one of those events in a woman’s life that are memorable for a variety of reasons. For some it’s because they got to have the fairytale nuptials of their dreams while for others it’s memorable for entirely different reasons.

What is it about a wedding that can turn even the sanest person into a raving lunatic? I mean we’ve all heard the term Bridezilla but equally scary is the creature known as the Monster in Law! The MIL may seem like a perfectly normal human around other people but take her anywhere near her daughter in law during wedding preparations and she can turn from angel to devil in the bat of an eye lid.

One poor woman was so fed up with her interfering MIL that she actually cancelled her wedding altogether just to spite her. You see, her MIL thought it was perfectly acceptable to add an extra 80 guests to the couple’s wedding list demanding that they all be invited, no questions asked!

The bride wrote into discussion forum REDDIT to ask whether or not she over reacted by cancelling the whole event.

The writer says she never really got along with her MIL and was always looked down upon because she came from a middle class family. Despite this, the couple ignored her over bearing nature and planned the wedding despite not really wanting a big ceremony, “it always felt like we were planning out of obligation.”

But things took a turn for the worse when just two months before the big day, her MIL “sends me a detailed spreadsheet with about 80 people on it, telling me that none of these invitees were optional, and I had better invite all of them.”

This would’ve been no big deal if the groom’s parents were going to actually pay for the wedding, but this wasn’t the case. And the 80 extra people was over the amount of guests they could afford to invite.

“This kind of flew me into a blind rage. I called everyone and cancelled. We got married in a national park with our two best friends,” she wrote.

While the decision may seem a little extreme it is completely understandable! In fact the bride got a lot of support from fellow REDDIT commenters telling her what she did was the best decision ever!

“You had the wedding you both wanted,” one person said in the comments. “You didn’t want the big ceremony, not everyone does, you admitted you were doing it out of obligation and your MIL decided to invite 80 people to your wedding without your knowledge or consent! Telling you after the fact was a power play on her part, she probably thought there was nothing you could do about it since she thought you certainly wouldn’t want to upset her or all those extra guests. She put you into check. Your reaction was check and mate. It was a very nice (expletive) You.”

“You are my hero,” another exclaimed. “Screw that lady and her manipulative (expletive). I’m proud of you for putting her in her place and a little bit sad for you that you had to. Hugs!”

“MIL overstepped and you avoided unnecessary drama by just canceling the whole thing. You got married the way that you wanted to and in the end, that is what matters – its your wedding, not hers,” another wrote.

In a follow up post the bride said, “I kind of wish the theatrics were there when we told her. She is very much an ‘appearance’ person, so she would never make a scene. She kind of blanched and was visibly horrified when she realised that SHE would have to call everyone she invited and cancel on them, because they weren’t a part of our formal guest list. Honestly, it felt really good to finally see her squirm for once.”

What do you think? Do you agree with the bride’s decision to cancel the wedding or could she have handled it differently so that the MIL could still attend the wedding of her son and daughter in law?
