YouTuber Myka Stauffer Gets Blasted Online After Sharing On Video That Her Adopted Child Has Now Been ‘Rehomed.’

American blogger and YouTuber Myka Stauffer caused outrage on line recently after posting a seven minute vlog with husband James to her YouTube channel titled “an update on our family.”

During the video, a teary Myka spoke to her 717,000 subscribers discussing their decision to give up their adopted son Huxley. The toddler with special needs was ‘picked up’ from China in 2017 and has lived with the couple ever since. The outrage came after Myka described Huxley’s move as ‘rehomed’ to his ‘forever family. Terms often used for pets not people.

“After multiple assessments, after multiple evaluations, numerous medical professionals have felt that he needed a different fit in his medical needs. He needed more,” Myka explains. “There’s not an ounce of our body that doesn’t want Huxley with all of our being. There wasn’t a minute that I didn’t try our hardest… Do I feel like a failure as a mum? 500 percent. So when we get insidious, hurtful comments, it really makes it hurt worse.”

During Huxley’s initial adoption in 2017, Myka wrote a blog called “What Adopting My Autistic Son Has Taught Me.” In it she discussed that when she visited him for the first time at the Children’s Welfare Center she realised he “was profoundly developmentally delayed” but not that he had autism. That diagnosis came later where it was discovered he had autism spectrum disorder level 3. Myka initially seemed to take the news positively and saw it as something she could handle. “Huxley wasn’t the one who needed to change—it was me… my son has taught me to love completely and unconditionally, regardless of circumstances and without exceptions,” she said at the time.

Fast forward a few years and now it seems the couple think Huxley would be better off with another family. One that can provide him with everything he needs. People quickly took to Youtube to voice their disbelief at the decision with comments like:

I’m sorry but you did fail as a mum. You wouldn’t have given up your own child.

Unfortunately second adoptions are quite common, with the  U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimating that 135,000 adoptions are finalised every year in the U.S., and 1 to 5% of them are “dissolved.”
Whatever the reasons may be for second adoptions there’s no denying the fact that children will often have their lives disrupted and the experience may leave them feeling worthless and rejected.
We can only hope Huxley has found himself in a loving family that will give him all the nurturing and understanding he needs and deserves.
