House Rules Semi Final Reno Reveals + Goodbye Fil & Joe

In the House Rules episode that we’ve been waiting for all week, we finally get to see all the amazing work the three teams have done for the Leukaemia Foundation. The scores were then handed down, and one couple were given the news that they were to head home. We said goodbye to Victoria’s Fil and Joe, and watched as both Luke and Cody and Claire and Hagan went through to Sunday’s live grand final.

First though, a recap on exactly what the teams were up against:

The block of units were divided into zones for each of the teams to renovate, and each unit was given a different design brief – Scandinavian, Manhattan or Balinese Resort themes. Each time had zones in different apartments, plus the backyard as well.

First, the Scandinavian themed apartment

Starting with Fil and Joe’s sleek and shiny kitchen, complete with mini-breakfast bar/desk.

Their fresh, bright bathroom ticked all the boxes in the Scandi Chic brief, with spectacular black and white floor tiles which climbed the wall into the shower cubicle to the left of this image.

Claire and Hagan’s beautifully calm and relaxing Scandi bedroom featured geometric wall art, painted by Claire.

On to the Manhattan designs!

Luke and Cody’s Manhattan (kinda basic) living room:

And their swish Manhattan bathroom, featuring lots of subway tile:

which they also used in the kitchen! Their zone lacked a bit of bling but there were no major styling or reno errors.

Fil and Joe finished off the Manhattan apartment with a bright yellow second bedroom.

Then the Balinese Resort Unit

Claire and Hagan’s bathroom lost points due to the placement of the vanity. It was deemed too low to be used comfortably.

Their Balinese kitchen was well received although they were criticised for matching their pebbled splashback with the benchtop.

Fil and Joe opted for super loud wallpaper and a nib wall to tuck their desk into a nook with mixed results. Everyone hated the nib, and Carolyn declared that the wall only worked because people seated at the lounge would have their backs to it. Ouch!

Luke and Cody rounded out the Bali apartment with their cool, fresh master bedroom, complete with bamboo panelled feature wall behind the bed.

Finally, the back garden was revealed to much praise from the judges.

The teams created beautiful zones that the families staying in the Leukaemia Foundations unit’s will enjoy for many years to come.

Our House Rules judges toured the properties as usual, pointing out the bits and pieces that they loved and hated. Then it was time for the current residents to go through and check out their temporary new digs.

Many tears were shed, both on-screen and off, as the families went through each unit. It was particularly sad when it was revealed that the lovely elderly gentleman who stayed in one of the units had since passed away, and the episode was dedicated to him in the credits.

To the pointy end of the episode now – the voting

As the teams stood nervously in front of our ever-gorgeous host Johanna Griggs, their scores were revealed by Joe and Wendy.

Luke & Cody (Qld): 17

Claire & Hagan (VIC): 15

Fil & Joe (VIC): 13

With the lowest score, we said goodbye to Fil and Joe. Claire remarked that it was “tough seeing your friends go” and I wholeheartedly agree. It’s been such a wholesome, genuinely lovely season of House Rules and it’s sad to see anyone go home, especially this late in the competition.

So now it’s down to two teams heading into Sunday’s big live grand final!

Who will win? And more importantly, who do you want to win?

My money’s on Luke and Cody, but I’ll be happy either way. They are all such lovely people who could use their mortgage cleared.

Until next time,
