7 Excellent Reasons to Take Part in National Walk Safely to School Day

National Walk Safely to School Day is happening across Australia on Friday 16 May 2025, and it’s a great opportunity to start a healthy habit that can last a lifetime.
Now in its 26th year, and supported by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, Walk Safely to School Day encourages families, schools, and communities to take simple, positive action for the health and wellbeing of our children and the environment.
“The best form of physical activity for all Australians is walking regularly,” explains Harold Scruby CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. “Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day,” Harold Scruby said.

Here are 7 great reasons to get involved:
It Helps Kids Stay Active and Healthy
Walking to school gets hearts pumping, muscles moving, and sets kids up with the energy they need to focus and thrive in the classroom. Regular physical activity helps reduce the risk of childhood obesity — a serious concern with 1 in 4 Australian children currently affected.
It Boosts Brainpower
Movement isn’t just good for bodies — it’s great for minds too. Walking before school can improve mood, increase focus, and boost cognitive performance. It’s a natural, no-cost way to help your child get ready to learn.
It Teaches Road Safety Skills
Walking to school gives children real-life practice in being safe pedestrians. The day also serves as an important reminder: children under 10 should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road. Learning these habits early can save lives.
It’s Better for the Planet
By leaving the car at home, even just for one day, families can help reduce air pollution and traffic congestion around schools. Less idling means cleaner air for everyone — especially for children with asthma or respiratory sensitivities.
It Reduces Traffic Around Schools
Fewer cars at drop-off time makes school zones calmer, safer, and more pleasant for everyone. Walk Safely to School Day encourages less car-dependency and promotes better use of public transport and active travel.
It Encourages Healthy Eating Habits
Many schools and parent committees run a Host a Healthy Breakfast on the day. It’s a chance to start conversations about good nutrition, healthy fuel for learning, and enjoying food in a fun, social setting.

It Brings Families and Communities Together
Whether it’s walking as a family, joining a group of neighbours, or organising a ‘walking bus,’ this event encourages connection. It turns an everyday routine into a chance to engage with your local area and build a stronger sense of community.
Simply commit to walking with your child to school on Friday 16 May — or even just part of the way if that works better for your family. Every step counts.
