Chrissie Swan Taking Her Kids To McDonalds Is Not News!

Chrissie Swan Taking Her Kids To McDonalds Is Not News!

Can you just stop and imagine for a second that moments from your normal every day life were splashed across the nation’s media outlets and turned into non stories. No really? Just try.

If it was my life this morning, the headline would read something like this:

“Mother of two wearing leggings as pants frantically runs across busy intersection while carrying a hot coffee and her phone. She drops her phone and nearly gets run over while trying to retrieve it.”

Or if it was yesterday’s news the headline would be:

“Woman spends 45 minutes at Chemist Warehouse trying on different under eye concealers to hide the fact she’s been tired for 10 years. She then proceeded to the checkout where she was tempted by the dark chocolate and jellybeans in front of her. She bought them both.”

Riveting storylines aren’t they?

So imagine my surprise when as I was scrolling through my news feed yesterday and I came across a photo of Chrissie Swan with her three kids walking into a McDonalds restaurant. I thought to myself, hope she’s okay, what’s happened here?

Here’s what the headline read: Lunch on the go! Chrissie Swan takes her kids to McDonald’s in Melbourne as her hit radio show tops the ratings!

The enlightening article continued with this pointless dribble: Her Nova 100 radio show was just announced as Melbourne’s most popular breakfast program, toppling rivals at Fox FM. But despite her career success, Chrissie Swan still enjoys family time with her kids – Leo, eight, Kit, five, and three-year-old Peggy.
The 43-year-old media personality was spotted taking her children to a McDonald’s restaurant in Melbourne earlier this month.

The ‘article’ was accompanied by photos of Swan and her three children walking into the restaurant. Followed by more photos of them in the car going though the drive thru instead. And that’s it! Nothing else! And yet that was enough to warrant a story on a ‘news site.’ Give me a break!

Clearly the intent of the author was to fat shame Swan for taking her kids to Maccas. It gave haters ammunition to start a conversation on her weight and question why she chose to eat junk food. But what I find absolutely disgusting is the fact her three kids were thrown into a situation they had no control over. None of them knew their photo was being taken and none of them consented to it being published.

Why should the public be allowed to scrutinise Swan’s children for doing what countless other kids do every day! The fact that their mum is in the public eye doesn’t mean they forego their right to privacy.

Two of the kids also had dummies in their mouths which of course sparked outrage from the mum warriors who sat behind their computers and threw out passive aggressive comments like: Is it just me or are those kids too old for dummies- just asking.

While others were more direct with beauties like: WTF is Chrissie thinking letting her kids walk around with dummies!!?

Oh my God! Leave the woman alone! Unless you are the perfect specimen of a mother who has never gone to Maccas for half an hour of sanity or chucked some fries to your screaming kids in the back seat to keep them quiet then who are you to judge?

How do we know Swan wasn’t taking the kids for a weekly treat to Maccas. Why are we all suddenly assuming she does it all the time. And you know what? Even if she goes every bloody day- it’s still none of our business and it’s definitely not news!!

Remember when she was caught smoking in her car while she was pregnant? How mortifying for her. She would’ve been keeping the dark secret to herself for ages and having it exposed like that would’ve been the worst!

Imagine someone manages to get a shot of you sneaking a ciggie in or having a sip of wine  while pregnant! Of course I’m not condoning it or saying it’s right but we’ve all been in similar situations! Heck- I was just sharing with my friends last night that while I was getting the results of my pregnancy test over the phone from my doctor I was chain smoking as I was convinced I had already miscarried. Imagine a paparazzo sticking his head over the fence and snapping that moment of glory!

Just because Chrissy Swan has a career in the public eye that doesn’t mean she suddenly has to stop living her life. Nor should it mean the public gets to shame her for her choices. If she chooses to eat Big Macs now and then and take her kids out for a treat then so be it! And honestly, I can think of a lot more situations where parents deserve to be named and shamed for the way they treat their kids. And frankly, taking your kids through a Maccas drive through is far from a news story or abuse in my eyes!
