A High School Posts A Sexist Poster Showing Female Students What They Can Wear To Prom!

Just when we thought we were making progress with women’s rights and gender equality another story of sexist conduct rears it’s ugly head.

Last week a school in America put up a poster a week before prom telling girls exactly what types of dresses were allowed to be worn and which weren’t.

Apart from the fact most of the girls would’ve had their outfits picked and paid for by this stage what has students and parents outraged is the insinuation that to be a ‘good girl’ you had to wear the ‘right’ kind of dress. What does that mean you may ask? Well judging by  the poster it means that ‘good girls’ don’t show skin!

Yes! The above flyer was plastered all over the halls of Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville where it was not very well received! The flyers had “Going to Stanton Prom?” written on the top with a different dress printed out, seen above. The three revealing dresses had “NO YOU’RE NOT” written underneath the photos, blatantly stating that cutouts, exposed cleavage, high slits, and completely-open-back dresses were “NOT” permitted. But one of the most unbelievable parts about these flyers is actually the one style that is allowed –  a sleeveless, skintight mermaid gown — writing, “YES YOU ARE. GOOD GIRL.”

So are you a good girl because you’ve covered up or are you a good girl because you’re abiding by the rules? Whichever it may be, it reeks of sexism and sounds creepy! There’s no denying that the three “NO” dresses are pretty revealing, but the school is implying that those who have a dress like the three banned ones are bad people.

Not only is that highly inappropriate but where is the poster for the boys? This kind of gender inequality does nothing to help the problem of victim blaming- ie. if a girl dresses in a particular way she is a ‘type’ of girl so therefore ‘invites’ unsavoury behaviour from others. So easy to blame the female and her choice of attire!

As expected, the Stanton students were beyond angry upon seeing the fliers, with many taking to Twitter to express how appalled they were with their school and starting the hashtag #SCPGoodGirl.

The posters have since been removed with the Duval County School District taking to Twitter to explain saying, “The display of prom dress photos at Stanton College Prep is not appropriate or an approved policy. Images were removed on Mon.”

Even the school principal has since apologised: “Please do accept my apology for this poor delivery of information. Our intent is to make sure prom is enjoyable and memorable.”
