An Increase In Crime Predicted As ALDI Store Prepares To Sell Wine For $2.79 A Bottle!

An Increase In Crime Predicted As ALDI Store Prepares To Sell Wine For $2.79 A Bottle!

If you’re a regular ALDI customer then you will no doubt be familiar with it’s awesomeness! I mean where else can you go to pick up some milk and sleeping bags at the same time? I love the fact that I never know what goodies I’ll come across in that much coveted centre aisle! It truly is a treasure trove- everything from sports bras to outdoor settings and everything in between!

ALDI also stocks alcohol. Not in all stores but in most. While many may argue this isn’t a great idea, the supermarket has put some rules in place to try and curb consumption. For example they won’t sell alcohol to you before 10:00am (something I found out one morning when I tried to stock up for a BBQ I was holding) and none of it is refrigerated! But it is darn cheap and some of it is of excellent quality- especially the Rose!

An Aldi store in Perth has police concerned as they have been approved to sell cheap alcohol. And I mean really cheap! Three varieties of wine will retail at just $2.79 a bottle!

Police are worried that the low cost may prompt some people to drink more which could lead to an increase in alcohol-related crime.

West Australia Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan said, “Usually the lower the price of alcohol, the higher the consumption. And usually the higher the problems for alcohol related crime.”

While some Perth customers are happy with the sale of alcohol at ALDI others believe it’s a ‘huge mistake’ and that “it should be kept separate from the rest of the grocery items.”

Julie Stafford from McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth said selling cheap alcohol in supermarkets is a bad idea.

“This is going to normalise alcohol by having it on the supermarket shelf near the bread and milk.”

Do you buy alcohol at ALDI and do you think it’s a good idea for it to be sold so cheap in a supermarket? Will it increase crime?
