Lyka Pet Food Review: How Lyka Made Me Rethink What I Feed My Dogs

The teenage years are not for the faint hearted, and I don’t know what I’d do without the joyful welcome, (complete with wagging tails and wet kisses) I get from my beloved canine companions when I return home from running errands — even when I’ve only been gone a few minutes! They, at least, are pleased to see me, and don’t start every conversation with, “What’s for dinner?”
Although, maybe they would if they could…and as it turns out I haven’t been doing as well as I thought in that department!
As much as I adore my two beautiful rescue pups, I’m going to come clean and admit, when it comes to what I feed them I’ve never put too much thought into it. Grabbing a bag of kibble emblazoned with buzzwords like ‘premium,’ ‘complete,’ or ‘balanced’ from the supermarket shelf has always been my go-to. ‘It’s in the pet food aisle therefore it’s good for my dog,’ was my naïve assumption. And I no doubt would have continued on my merry way, feeding my furry little cheer squad a low-quality diet had I not been given the opportunity to trial Lyka Pet Food and share my honest thoughts and experience.
I know, even my dogs are doing reviews now!
Disclosure: I was gifted a box of Lyka food for the purpose of giving an honest review.
The Lyka Pet Food Difference
Unlike most of the dog food available in the supermarket, which I have now learned is highly processed and full of artificial preservatives, Lyka makes their meals with only fresh, high-quality ingredients with none of the nasties. They are gently cooked, making them nutrient dense, easy to digest, (and going by my dogs’ reactions), delicious too! Lyka pet food is not only formulated by a vet nutritionist, but they are also Aussie made, with 100% locally sourced, premium protein.
Get Lyka’s Personalised Meal Plan for Your Pup
The first thing to do when you decide to make the switch to Lyka’s real food, is to answer a series of questions about your pupper on their website. Learning about your pup’s age, breed, weight, size, allergies, activity level, etc enables them to create a personalised plan specifically for them.
I particularly love this aspect of Lyka. Along with the convenience of having all the meals delivered to my door, I also got a different plan for each of my dogs. Floki, our five-year-old Kelpie X is a bit food-obsessed (possibly because of being underfed before he was rescued) and makes it his mission in life to (very convincingly) assure whichever teen is around that I have forgotten to feed him! Subsequently, despite long walk and ball games, he’s started to put on a little weight on his backend that I’ve been keen for him to lose.
Portion-controlled pet food sounded perfect!

The other great thing is that you can set up your subscription so that your pet food is delivered when it is convenient for you, and it’s easy to make changes. Simply change, skip or cancel deliveries at any time.
Delivery
I received a text message the day before my order was due to arrive, letting me know it was enroute and scheduled for delivery.
The parcel contained 2 weeks’ worth of food for each of my dogs, that had been snap frozen and carefully packaged to stay cold.

As Lyka pet food contains no preservatives it won’t stay fresh indefinitely, so should be kept frozen until needed. I pack meals into the spare outdoor freezer and simply pop one for each pup into the fridge each night so that it’s defrosted and ready to go in the morning.

The Verdict After Two Weeks of Using Lyka Pet Food
Floki
As directed, I transitioned both dogs onto Lyka slowly, for the first few days mixing their usual Kibble with the Lyka food so their microbiome had time to adjust to the new diet. I also used the Go to Gut Helper Supplement every few days to ease the transition and help boost their immunity and reduce digestive issues.
Floki is prone to digestive issues so I was particularly careful to transition him slowly, and keen to see if Lyka food would make a difference.
After 2 and a half weeks not only has Floki begun to lose the chunky-butt, but his stools are much firmer and easier to clean up, and no more eye-watering doggy farts to deal with!
So, although he’s hardly a food connoisseur, (this dog would honestly eat anything!), he has transitioned well, loves the stuff, and there are already definite signs that it is improving his health!
Tilly
I’d never say this within her earshot of course, but Tilly came to us from the rescue when she was around 6 months old, and as beautiful as she is, she’s always had a more pronounced ‘doggy smell’ than Floki. It doesn’t matter how often she swims, or baths, she’s just doomed to smell like a dog…or so I thought!
I’m not sure how or why, but since starting Lyka she just smells better and her fur (which is coarser than her brother’s) feels softer too! Who would have though it?
If we notice these significant changes after 2 weeks, it really goes to show how important your dog’s diet is, doesn’t it?
I have no hesitation in recommending Lyka to other dog owners. After all, all we want is the best for them and to love them for as long as possible!
