Nothing makes me happier than getting the kids and their friends together for a board game night — it always results in a lot of laughs (and the occasional disagreement!)

Forget Monopoly and Scrabble, there are some really fun and engaging games that not only entertain but teach you about the players too!

We were given the opportunity to try some popular board games — Wavelength, Hurry up Chicken Butt, Herd Mentality, and Exploding Kittens. So, we ordered pizza and put them to the test!

Hurry Up Chicken Butt

This game gets you on your feet and into a silly mood. Shake the Chicken to reveal your activity, then quickly perform it before passing the Chicken Shaker to the next player. Don’t get caught holding the Chicken when the timer goes off! This game is fast, funny and it’s different every time.

This is a great game to play for little ones too, or when you have a range of different ages because everyone has an equal chance to win and act a little goofy!

We started games night with this one because the fast-paced, silly challenges were a great ice-breaker and got everyone warmed up for a fun night.

Exploding Kittens

Exploding kittens is a thrilling new board game twist on the record-breaking, best-selling card game, loved around the world. Race your way to the finish without exploding! Use powerful cards to sabotage your rivals, dodge danger and change your fate. Just when you think you’ve got the upper hand, the board can flip, revealing a new path with even deadlier odds.

This game brought out more of a competitive vibe and the unexpected twists kept everyone engaged and the quick rounds meant no one had to wait long to jump back in. It’s silly, strategic and perfect for people who love a bit of unpredictability and the chance to sabotage their opponents!

Herd Mentality

Voted as “the best party game ever created” by TechRadar in 2022, “Herd Mentality is the game where you need to think like the crowd to win.

This game was a huge hit with our gathered group. The idea is that you write down what you think the most common answer will be and hope you’re thinking like everyone else. It sparked a lot of laughs, especially when someone gave a rogue answer and got left with the dreaded pink cow. The best thing about this game is that it exposes all the weird, hilarious and offbeat ways other people think!

Wavelength

Wavelength is a social guessing game for two teams focused on mind-reading. Teams alternate turns, rotating a dial on a spectrum to guess the hidden location of a bullseye. For each turn, one teammate acts as the Psychic who knows where the bullseye is, drawing a card with a binary pair (e.g., Job – Career). The Psychic then gives a conceptual clue to their team, indicating where on that spectrum they believe the bullseye lies between the two extremes.

My teens and their friends were most excited to try this one as it has been all over TikTok. It turned out to be a fantastic way to spark thoughtful discussion and hilarious debates, and it was really interesting to see how different people interpret different concepts. It encouraged listening, considering other people’s perspectives and respectful disagreements — all helpful skills for teens to practice in a relaxed, fun environment!
