Dumb Daddy Stuff Isn’t Funny Anymore and It Needs to Stop

Dumb Daddy Stuff Isn’t Funny Anymore and It Needs to Stop

It’s time to retire some jokes that just aren’t funny anymore. And the dumb dad ones are at the top of the list.

Recently, this baby onesie was spotted at a US baby store by an insulted father who then posted it to Reddit under the title This shirt is bullshit.

He’s absolutely right, that shirt is bullshit.

And it’s not just because it’s perpetuating the idiotic stereotype that dads can’t do anything right when it comes to children, but because there is no way in hell that there is an equally stupidly-captioned shirt aimed at mums.

Come on, it’s 2017, we don’t tell dumb blonde jokes anymore, do we? Well, those of us who have gotten with the times don’t anyway. I can’t speak for the older generations. They might still have a chuckle about outdated stereotypes that the rest of us have long-since moved on from, having seen the quiet hurt that “harmless jokes” often cause.

Maybe they are the ones who came up with the shirt, who knows? They are generally as unapologetically un-PC as a person can get, and this sort of shit probably applied back in their day.

But not in our day.

In our day, our men are just as capable as parents as we are, if not more so. Our men change nappies and bathe their children. Our men are taught that fathers nurture and love their babies as much as mothers do. Our men get paternity leave, and fight for parent’s rooms instead of mother’s rooms. Our men are insulted by this brand of humour, and rightly so.

still not laughing

Then we have the well-meaning but hideously misguided people who spot a father out with his children and ask him if he’s babysitting.

It’s called PARENTING, people. Look it up. Both mums and dads are fully capable of parenting their own children. It’s really not unusual.

much better

I know these jokes and comments are made by well-meaning individuals who mean no real harm. “Ohhh get a sense of humour”, they say. “Lighten up, it’s just a silly t-shirt.”

No. It has got to stop. The world has moved on and we’re not laughing. Get with the times.
