The Low Down on Low Fat Diets

I have to say that I don’t agree with Low Fat Diets. I know that most people believe and have been bought up/taught to believe that eating fattening foods will make us fat. And to some extent that’s true – if you eat a lot of saturated fats – cakes, biscuits, pastries, deep fried foods etc you will get Fat!

Have a think about this:

Each gram of fat contains 9 calories. Carbs & protein each have 4 calories per gram. (I hate counting calories, so this is just to explain!). When you see it like this, it seems to make sense to cut out fat and go for Low Fat products, or go on a Low Fat Diet. If you have been doing this for a while, I am sure you haven’t been overly pleased with the results, and here a few reasons as to why that may be the case:

  • Good Fat in your diet has its own purpose – to make you feel full and satisfied after a meal. Fats tend to take longer to digest. But be smart, go for the ‘good fats’ – Avocado, Olive Oil, Oily fish, Nuts/Seeds. Your body actually needs these good fats to aid digestion. Don’t be scared of the good fats. Having saturated fat in your diet is not good for you. And to make it worse, most of the products high in saturated fat are full of SUGAR, which brings me to my next point
  • SUGAR makes you FAT, fat doesn’t make you fat. When you are on a Low Fat Diet and you buy all the Low Fat, Diet, No Fat, Lite, Extra Lite products, the way they make them taste a bit better is by adding SUGAR. Less Fat = More SUGAR.
  • The other thing about Low Fat products is they have more sugar in them, the more sugar you have in your diet, the more sugar you crave – it’s a vicious circle. You need to start weaning yourself off sugar, once and for all! There is a sugar monster that lives in your gut. You may have heard of Candida, or yeast infections etc, they feed on sugar! The more sugar you give it, the more it wants! The less sugar you have, the less you crave it. Try it. It will be hard to start with, but go sugar free for 2 weeks – that includes fruit and see how you feel.
  • Stay away from anything with Nutri Sweet, Splenda, and any other fake sugar products/sweeteners. Google Aspartame and have a read with what it comes up with! That is what is in those products! Yes, that includes Diet drinks, Diet Cordials, Diet stuff with no calories – they are SO much worse for you. And you will just crave more sugar and more bad food.

To try and reverse some of the bad stuff sugar can do, try taking Acidophilous capsules. You can get them from Health Food Stores, Chemists etc. You should find them in the fridge and best to keep it in there when you get home. Inner Health Plus is the brand most people would have heard of.

DON’T have those Probiotics drinks/yoghurts etc – they also have sugar in them, which defeats the purpose of having them to help your gut!

What I recommend, is having the Full Fat product, but have less of it. Enjoy the bit that you eat, as it will taste SO much better and be better for you in the long run!

Cut SUGAR out of your diet and you will lose weight, you will have more energy, be more motivated and feel SO much better.

Here is a blog that talks about the effects of Soft Drink to your body, just some food for thought

There is a book called Sweet Poison – Why Sugar Makes us Fat by David Gillespie if you want more reading!
