A Seemingly Innocent Photo Of A Girl Nurse And Boy Doctor Is Anything But Cute!
A medical page with over 217 thousand followers on twitter shared a seemingly innocent photo of two kids dressed in scrubs recently with the caption “This is cute, isn’t it?”
While at first glance you may be forgiven for thinking it’s just a little girl in pink scrubs walking down a hospital corridor holding hands with a little boy in blue scrubs, but if you pay closer attention you’ll see why this pic is anything but cute.
On the back of the girl it says “Nurse in training” while the boy’s outfit says “Doctor in training.”

So in a day and age when we tell our kids (particularly our daughters) that they can grow up to be anything they want it seems that their gender stereotypes are still deeply engrained in some professions.
Medical Shots, which shares information on all things health related just set back their profession 50 years! Back to a time when all little girls could dream of and hope to become was a nurse in sensible shoes. While boys were encouraged to go forth and become doctors, lawyers even astronauts.
Today we may believe this perception is archaic but when photos like these are shared on such a public platform it can only lead us to be believe that the assigned gender roles that come with the medical profession are still prevalent.
Why can’t the girl have the doctor’s shirt and the boy wear the nurse’s. And don’t get me started on the whole pink and blue thing. Are we still assuming pink represents female and blue male? What is this – 1930?
Thankfully someone on twitter took it upon themselves to fix the photo with a truer representation of our medical profession.

Nor surprisingly, followers of Medical Shots were not very impressed with the photo and called it out for exactly what it was- a sexist photo. What do you think? Do you agree?
