Loewe’s Spring Summer 2023 Collection Features Actual Grass Growing Out Of It’s Garments
If you’re anything like me and struggle to keep a house plant alive then you have zero chance of pulling off these looks from Loewe. Their 2023 collection which debuted at Paris Fashion Week consisted of actual grass growing out of their clothes and shoes. If nothing else, it brings new meaning to sustainable fashion! Would you give this a go?
“Birds flying, fish swimming, water dripping and humans kissing on screens. The real and the digitally reproduced. Nature and technology meet within a glaringly white, mind-expanding environment. A collection that juxtaposes to entice new perspectives,” an Instagram post of the show describes.
“Plants that have been grown on a series of garments and shoes are the result of an experimental process developed in collaboration with Paula Ulargui Escalona. The idea is that over time the pieces merge with nature. They took 20 days to reach the desired level of growth in a specially constructed polytunnel on the outskirts of Paris. They require regular watering and maintenance to ensure a runway-ready appearance.”
The show explored themes such as humans becoming so removed from nature and its destruction, that in the future the only way they would be able to view it would be through digital screens.
Designer Jonathan Anderson used Chia plants and cats wort growing on coats, sweatshirts, sweatpants and sneakers. According to the Loewe website, the plants that have been used on the garments and shoes are the result of an “experimental process developed in collaboration with Paula Ulargui Escalona. The idea is that over time the pieces merge with nature. They took 20 days to reach the desired level of growth in a specially constructed polytunnel on the outskirts of Paris. They require regular watering and maintenance to ensure a runway-ready appearance.”
One of the items, the grass sneakers are already a hit on social media. The designs feature long stalks of grass or a group of micro greens (Chia plants) growing on the top of the shoe.
Now all you need is a teeny, tiny lawnmower! Hahaha!
