A Men’s Only “Penis Seat” Was Installed On A Subway To Highlight Sexual Harassment!
A social experiment in Mexico has seen the city’s metro system install a “penis seat” in one of its carriages. It features a man’s torso and penis moulded into the seat.
A sign above the seat states that it is exclusively for men, while another sign on the floor reads, “It is annoying to travel this way, but not compared to the sexual violence women suffer in their daily commutes.”
The initiative is to get male riders thinking about the sexual harassment that women endure every day. But as you can see in the video below, the guys who sit on the seat— most likely actors —squirm uncomfortably and quickly abandon the seat entirely.
The Mexican government launched the campaign after finding 65 percent of women in Mexico City have been sexually harassed on the city’s buses or trains. The video also states that “nine out of 10 women in Mexico City have been victims of some form of sexual violence” in general.
There’s been a mixed reaction to the polarising PSA with many people expressing their opinions. Some people felt as though the campaign makes light of sexual harassment while others wondered how effective it would really be at preventing future incidents.
What do you think of the campaign?
