MTV Video Music Awards 2014 Wrap Up

The MTV Europe Music Awards 2014 were held over the weekend, and with Nicki Minaj as the host of the annual and uncensored show, it was bound to be colourful!

This year was the shows 20th anniversary and was held at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. As well as hosting, Nicki also performed and was lucky enough to accept an award which she won for Best Hip Hop. Fans flew to social media claiming that the only reason she won was because bigger artists like Iggy Azalea, Drake and Eminem didn’t attend.

She flew into the arena wearing a khaki dress with a long train and bedazzled bra. Throughout the show, she made nearly 10 wardrobe changes and performed her hits Anaconda and Super Bass.

She also used the show to debut a new collaboration with Skylar Grey called Bed Of Lies. They performed the song together on stage with Nicki slipping into one of her many costumes – a black lacy leotard.

She swore throughout her hosting duties, breaking broadcasting rules. She apologised by saying, “Sorry if I just cursed but I am Nicki Minaj.”

Ariana Grande, U2, Ed Sheeran and Alicia Keys were also among the performers.

Ariana won two awards – Best song for “Problem’ and Best Female. She was presented her award for best song by heavily pregnant Alicia Keys and British singer Emeli Sande.

One Direction took home three awards, including the award for Biggest Fans. They didn’t attend the ceremony but accepted their award via satellite.

Katy Perry started the night with seven nominations – the most of any nominees, but wasn’t there to accept any because she is in Australia on her tour.

Redfoo and David Hasselhoff both wore kilts – perfect for the place the awards were held in, and both presented awards. Ozzy Osbourne received a global icon award which was presented by Slash.

It still doesn’t beat last years MTV EMA’s, which were held in Amsterdam, where Miley Cyrus reportedly lit a joint on stage while accepting her award for Best Video.

Organisers revealed that 10,000km of cable had been installed to power the event, and a wiggery had been installed backstage to accommodate 500 wigs and 300 hairpieces.
Twenty two hairdressers and forty make-up artists assisted the acts while 80 costumes were also prepared.
The dressing rooms contained a number of treats, including a limited edition 10-year-old Highland single malt whisky from Glengoyne.
Meanwhile, each presenter and performer were given presents including diamond and crystal jewellery, condoms, and SpongeBob SquarePants socks.
