Offspring Finale. Is This the End?
Last night saw the end of one of Australia’s best loved series. Offspring said goodbye in what felt like a final farewell rather than an end of season finale. In it’s final hurrah it had it all – babies, drama and a threesome all rolled into an hour of highs and lows that tied up all those loose ends and gave us an ending worthy of many Logie awards.
Here are my top moments from the Offspring Finale:
1. BILLIE”S PHONECALL TO THOMAS.
Billie has that knack of being able to tell that something is not right with Nina. As anyone with a brother or sister can tell you there is always a niggling feeling in your stomach that when all is not right with your sibling. So just as Billie was about to board a plane to London with Mick she decides to call Thomas to say goodbye. Upon hearing Billie’s voice, cheating Thomas breaks out in a sweat and makes Billie promise not to tell his wife and Nina. Cue Nina’s wide eyed look of horror and her screams of “WIFE, WHAT WIFE? BABY? WHAT BABY?” And with that it’s see ya Mick and Neens here I come.
2. BABIES GALORE.
I loved that Nina decided to stick with her passion of being in obstetrics and delivering babies. After delivering so many last night and setting every woman’s ovaries into overdrive, the most poignant moment was the look between her and Leo as she was holding up a newborn, that spoke volumes. This is where I belong. This is what it’s all about. Nina said it best herself, “No matter how many times I do this, each baby is still special. Every single one.” SO. MANY. TEARS!
3. BILLIE FINDING HER ANCHOR.
In what was the best role reversal ever, Billie found herself in the counsellor’s seat while Lawrence was lying on the couch in a state of despair. Broken and confused, it was Billie speaking sense and guiding Lawrence to find his anchor and assuring him everything else will work itself around it. Billie’s anchor is Zoe. The anchor that keeps her grounded amongst her manic moods and many stages of impulsive actions. Zoe will forever be the one that gave Billie a sense of purpose and calm.
4. NINA FINDING HER BALLS.
Seeing Nina confront Thomas for the low life he is, was just priceless. I have to add that I never liked Thomas. There was something off about him from the start- and I don’t just mean his dry, monotone acting. There was no chemistry or spark between him and Nina. It was never going to last. And seeing Nina find the strength to tell him that he meant nothing to her was just gold. However her lack of profanities and missing slap on the face were omissions that I would have loved to see!
5. LEO’S LOVE CONFESSION.
Leo had Nina’s back from day one. It was always going to be Leo over Slomas. But seeing him profess his love for her in such a raw and honest way was beautiful. Who doesn’t love a man that has the chutzpah to say I LOVE YOU and not regret it? Leo understands Nina and knows how much she loved Patrick. He doesn’t want to take his place, he just wants to love her. And seeing Nina accept and acknowledge her feelings for Leo makes me think she’s giving her heart to the right man. Team Leo all the way!
6. BILLIE AND NINA.
For me personally, Offspring has always been about the relationship between Billie and Nina. Sisters that are so different and yet infinitely alike. Over the seasons I’ve watched them endure their own hardships with miscarriages and heartache. They’ve led their own lives and yet their happiness is incomplete without the happiness of the other. It has been the realest portrayal of sisters on a tv show that I have ever seen. Their fierce loyalty and unconditional love towards each other really is the crux of the show for me. I still cry every time I think of the time Nina was heavily pregnant and so utterly distraught by the death of Patrick that she was worried she wouldn’t be able to love her baby. To which Billie replied “Well, then I’ll cover you. If you’re too sad to start with, I’ll love the baby…I’ll love the baby till you’re ready to.” And love it she did. I love Billie and Nina so much as it makes me realise how infinitely lucky I am to have my sister- my very own Neens.
I’m happy with the ending of Offspring. I’m satisfied with the way the writers decided to leave things. Seeing the whole Proudman clan gather for that final photo with Nina front and centre was a culmination of a journey through life that showed promise and optimism for all its members. And of course it wouldn’t be complete without one last approving look from Patrick to his gorgeous baby daughter and her mother.
What did you think of the finale? Did you have a favourite moment?
