Luna Tops the Charts as Australia’s Most Loved Pet Name

Move over baby names—Luna has officially taken the crown as Australia’s most popular name for furry family members in 2025! Whether it’s inspired by moonlit skies or magical pop culture icons, Luna has stolen hearts across the country, topping the list for both dogs and cats, according to new data from national pet insurance provider Petsy.

For families choosing names that fit their pet’s personality, short, sweet, and affectionate names are clearly the vibe. Following Luna, favourites like Coco, Charlie, and Poppy are high on the list for dogs, while Nala, Milo, and Mochi join Luna at the top for cats.

Interestingly, names like Teddy, Charlie and Leo appear in both top 10 lists—proving that Aussies love classic, human-style names that work across the species divide. Because let’s be honest: pets aren’t just animals anymore—they’re siblings, snuggle buddies, and part of the crew.

“Pet names say a lot about how Australians view their pets, they’re part of the family. We’re seeing strong trends towards short, playful, and affectionate names,” said Monica Limanto, Founder of Petsy.

Jolene enjoys writing, sharing and connecting with other like-minded women online – it also gives her the perfect excuse to ignore Mount-Washmore until it threatens to bury her family in an avalanche of Skylander T-shirts and Frozen Pyjama pants. (No one ever knows where the matching top is!) Likes: Reading, cooking, sketching, dancing (preferably with a Sav Blanc in one hand), social media, and sitting down on a toilet seat that one of her children hasn’t dripped, splashed or sprayed on. Dislikes: Writing pretentious crap about herself in online bio’s and refereeing arguments amongst her offspring.
