Tips for Surviving a Long-Haul Flight with Kids

There may have been a time when you looked forward to boarding a long-haul flight — you’d watch a couple of movies, sip on a glass of wine, and maybe even get a bit of shut-eye. But add children into the mix, and the prospect of having to keep them entertained, comfortable and calm in a very confined space under the judgemental gaze of fellow passengers and suddenly international travel can seem much less appealing. However, it is possible to survive a long-haul flight with kids with careful planning.

Having done my fair share of flights with kids in tow, I’ve learned a few tricks along the way. Some through trial and error, others through sheer desperation. So, if you’re about to embark on a long flight with little ones, here are some sanity-saving tips to help make the journey as smooth as possible.

Pack Snacks Like Your Life Depends on It

Because, quite honestly, it does. A hungry child is a cranky child, and airline food doesn’t always appeal to tiny tastebuds. Pack a variety of their favourite snacks—think non-messy, easy-to-eat options like crackers, dried fruit, etc. Bonus tip: Lollipops or chewy snacks can also help with ear pressure during take-off and landing. However, avoid giving them too much sugar. A hyped-up child that is strapped into a seat for hours on end unable to expel their energy is not a pleasant travel partner!

Keep Them Entertained

Load up a tablet with their favourite shows, movies, and games, and don’t forget headphones—the entire cabin will not appreciate hearing Bluey on repeat. For screen-free options, sticker books, colouring pages, wipe-clean activity books, and a deck of cards can help to pass the time. The key is novelty—things they haven’t seen before tend to hold their attention longer – so consider buying some new things especially for the flight.

Choose Seats Wisely

Where you sit can make a big difference. If possible, book bulkhead seats for extra legroom or opt for a window-and-middle-seat combo to keep kids contained. If traveling with a baby, check if the airline offers bassinets. Also, try to select seats near the restroom for convenience.

Dress for Comfort (and Spills)

Dress the kids in comfy, layered clothing, and always, always pack a spare outfit (for them and for you!) Some kids can be prone to travel sickness and having to sit in wet, smelly clothes won’t be fun for you, or anyone else in your vicinity.

Be Prepared for Ear Pain

Changes in cabin pressure during takeoff and landing can be uncomfortable for kids. Help relieve ear pain by giving them something to suck on—like a pacifier, lollipop, or bottle—or encourage older kids to chew gum or yawn. Swallowing frequently can also help.

Don’t Rely on Them Falling Asleep

Yes, it’s wonderful when kids sleep on flights. But banking on it? That’s a rookie mistake. If they do nod off, fantastic! But if not, have a game plan for keeping them entertained. Some parents swear by bringing a cosy blanket or their child’s favourite stuffed toy to encourage sleep. Others resign themselves to walking up and down the aisles 47 times. Whatever works!

Manage Expectations (Yours, Not Theirs)

The reality is long-haul flights with kids are rarely a walk in the park. There will be moments of chaos, spilled drinks, loud protests, and at least one incident where something disappears under a seat, and you’ll have to contort yourself like a circus performer to retrieve it. Take deep breaths, pick your battles, and remind yourself—it’s temporary. It’ll all be worth it when you get to your destination!

Accept Help (and Ignore Judgy Stares)

Most people are understanding when they see parents doing their best. If a flight attendant offers help—take it. If a fellow passenger smiles sympathetically, smile back. And if someone shoots you the look because your toddler is having a meltdown? Well, that’s their problem!

Long-haul flights with kids can feel daunting, but with the right planning, they are doable. Keep them comfortable, entertained, and well-fed, and don’t forget to take a deep breath. Before you know it, you’ll be landing at your destination, ready for your adventure!

Safe travels!
