Have We Overreacted to Jamie Oliver’s Breastfeeding Comments?
Yet again the breastfeeding debate has been brought back into light due to comments made from Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver.
The 40-year-old father to four, soon to be five, has experienced a backlash of complaints from women worldwide on his comments made on LBC radio about breastfeeding.
“Probably the most upsetting thing for me at the moment, and I’m desperately trying to scrabble around to get more information on it, [is] breastfeeding.”
“We have the worst breastfeeding in the world.
“If you breastfeed for more than six months, women are 50 per cent less likely to get breast cancer. When do you ever hear that? Never.
“It’s easy, it’s more convenient, it’s more nutritious, it’s better, it’s free,” said Oliver.
Jamie’s pursuit to encourage more women to breastfeed has been met with criticism, worldwide.
One mum, Robyn called back LBC radio after hearing the segment,“We didn’t know what to do with our nipples until Jamie Oliver popped his head above the parapet. He’s so annoying. Who did not know that breast milk was the best thing for their baby? It’s the most bizarre thing.”
While others attacked Oliver on Twitter about saying breastfeeding was ‘easy’.
“FYI #breastfeeding isn’t always easy! Exactly why us bottle feeding mums feel like failures is due to comments like @jamieoliver’s!!!”

“It’s [breastfeeding] simply an area of interest following my nutritional studies over the last two years. I understand that breastfeeding is often not easy and in some cases not even possible but just wanted to support women who DO woman to breastfeed and make it easier for them to do so.
“As a father – and father-to-be – I would never wish to offend women or mums as I know how incredible they are and I would get a kicking when I got home! Jamie.”
The whole breastfeeding debacle has overshadowed Oliver’s recent announcement that he and his wife Jools are expecting their 5th child together. The pregnancy was a complete surprise but they are excited by the new addition. The couple are parents to Poppy Honey Rosie, 13, Daisy Boo Pamela, 12, Petal Blossom Rainbow, six, and Buddy Bear Maurice, five.
