Talk Show Host Jimmy Kimmel Discusses Newborn Son’s Heart Surgery!
US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel used his opening monologue a few nights ago to speak about his new born son’s life saving surgery.
William ‘Billy’ John Kimmel was born on April 21st at Cedars-Sinai in LA and although the delivery went smoothly a few hours later the newborn appeared purple and medical staff detected a heart murmur.
What followed was emergency surgery, leading to a torturous time of waiting followed by more tests which ultimately led to a happy ending.
Kimmel shared the experience in an emotional opening monologue. “We had atheists praying for us, O.K.?” he said. “And I hate to say it — even that son of a b***h Matt Damon sent flowers.”
The newborn was taken into the hospital’s intensive care unit and was administered more tests. Kimmel said the room “started to fill up. More doctors, nurses and equipment started coming in and they determined that he wasn’t getting enough oxygen into his blood.”
Staff found that the boy’s pulmonary valve was completely blocked. In addition to the blockage, there was a hole in the wall between the left and right side of the heart.
“It was one of the longest three hours of my life,” Kimmel said. Billy will need to undergo another surgery in a few months to repair the hole. He will also have surgery again in his teens to replace the valve.
Kimmel tried to make light of the situation by sharing a photo of the baby after the procedure appearing to smile. Kimmel said, “Poor kid, not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face.”
The Jimmy Kimmel Live host thanked a long list of medical professionals who assisted his family throughout the entire process and brought up President Trump’s recent plan to cut funding from the National Institute of Health, which was prevented by Congress and instead increased on Sunday night.
“More than 40 per cent of those impacted by the cuts would be children,” he said.
“If your baby is going to die — and it doesn’t have to — it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I hope you never have to go there but if you do you’ll see so many kids from so many financial backgrounds being cared for so well with so much compassion.”
We are so happy the operation was a success and that little William is back home with his parents. Speedy recovery little one!
