Pregnant Women Warned About Incorrect Seatbelt Use

New research from Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) has revealed that many pregnant women across Australia may be wearing their seatbelts incorrectly, potentially putting themselves and their babies at risk in the event of a crash.

The study looked at seatbelt use among nearly 1,500 pregnant drivers and found that while almost all women reported always wearing a seatbelt (an encouraging 99.1%), only 41.4% were wearing it the right way.

So, what does correct seatbelt positioning look like during pregnancy?
Experts say the lap belt should sit under your belly and low across your hips and upper thighs, never across your bump. The shoulder strap should run between your breasts and off to the side of your belly, not across it.

Unfortunately, most participants in the study (87.7%) said they hadn’t received any information about how to correctly wear a seatbelt while pregnant. But those who did get proper guidance were more likely to get it right – 56.8% positioned their seatbelt correctly, compared to just 39.3% of those who hadn’t received any advice.

Lead researcher Associate Professor Sjaan Koppel says the findings are a wake-up call for better education around seatbelt safety during pregnancy.

“This study underscores a significant gap in correct seatbelt positioning among pregnant drivers. Despite the clear safety benefits of correct seatbelt use, the majority of pregnant occupants were not positioning their seatbelt correctly,” said Associate Professor Koppel.

“This gap highlights the critical need for targeted education and support from healthcare providers to ensure the safety of both pregnant individuals and their unborn children. It’s clear that providing accurate, accessible information about seatbelt use during pregnancy can have a significant impact on improving safety practices.”

“Public health campaigns should be tailored to raise awareness of the importance of seatbelt positioning, and further research is necessary to explore effective strategies for improving knowledge and comfort, as well as investigating potential vehicle and seatbelt design improvements to enhance safety,” said Associate Professor Koppel.

If you’re pregnant and getting behind the wheel (or even riding as a passenger), take a moment to check your seatbelt. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
