Delicious Sausage Roll Recipe

Making your own sausage rolls is easier and quicker than you think. Starting with a beef mince base, you simply combine a few ingredients, roll the mixture up in some ready made pastry, pop them in the oven and you will then be enjoying fresh, hot and delicious sausage rolls in no time.

These sausage rolls are packed with flavour, and better yet – they even have a few vegetables snuck in! With Footy Finals coming up, why not make a batch of these yummy sausage rolls to enjoy?

For this sausage rolls recipe you will need:

6 sheets of ready made puff pastry
500g / 17 oz beef mince
2 carrots – grated
1 zucchini – grated
4 slices of short cut bacon – diced
1 large brown onion – grated
2 eggs – 1 for the mixture and the other as an egg wash for the pastry
1/4 cup of tomato sauce or tomato chutney
1/4 cup of bbq sauce
2 tablespoons of sweet chilli sauce
2 tablespoons of dried mixed herbs
Salt and pepper to taste
Sesame seeds to garnish – optional

Let’s put it together:

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.

Remove the pastry from the freezer and allow to thaw slightly.

Combine the mince, grated vegetables, 1 egg, sauces, herbs, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Using a metal spoon, mix together until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Lightly beat the remaining egg in a cup and set aside.

Cut a sheet of pastry in half and brush one edge of the pastry with the beaten egg.

Using your hands, place the meat mixture in the middle of the pastry sheet.

Roll the pastry over the meat mixture to enclose it – start rolling from the opposite side to your egg wash.

Repeat until all of the meat/pastry has been used.

Cut the sausage rolls into smaller pieces, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds if you wish.

Place the sausage rolls on two baking trays lined with baking paper and cook for approximately 25 minutes or until the pastry has turned a golden brown. The baking time will vary depending on the size of your sausage rolls.
