Gone Girl Movie Review

Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

On his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing.

Nick’s story of a happy and blissful marriage begins to crumble thanks to pressure from police and media.

His strange behaviour, lies and deceit have everyone asking the question…..

The movie is based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling 2012 novel.

It begins interestingly, close towards the end and then loops back to the morning of Amy going missing.

We learn that both Amy and Nick lost their New York based writing jobs in the downturn and now Nick and his twin sister Margot run a bar in the town where he grew up. While Amy sits at home jobless.

It is then that Nick comes home to find the furniture turned upside down and his wife nowhere in sight.

Via an entry in Amy’s diary, the film flashes back to when the couple first met at a New York party. They leave the party arm in arm walking through the city. They stop and share a kiss in the moonlight.

The movie moves between two time periods. Before Amy went missing and the current when she IS missing. In the present, she is nowhere to be seen. In the past, she is everywhere.

Amy’s fate is surprisingly revealed in the middle of the movie – not at the end as expected. The middle part also introduces some new characters, Neil Patrick Harris as Amy’s ex lover and Tyler Perry as a lawyer.

The movie is shocking and provoking – but well worth a watch.
