Bride To Be Wants To Know If It’s Ok To Ask For Wedding Guests To Pay For Their Own Meals

Planning a wedding can get very expensive so it’s understandable for a couple to wanting to save a few dollars here and there. But how would you react if you were asked to pay for your own meal at a wedding in lieu of bringing a gift?

A Brisbane mum-of-two asked this very question on a well known budgeting Facebook group saying, “Let’s chat weddings! Newly engaged and looking for your best saving tips. I have considered asking guests to pay for their meal in lieu of presents. Is this a thing?”

Hmmm…this is a tricky one. If your friends and family truly love you and understand your reasoning behind the decision then we think it’s perfectly acceptable. However, if you have guests coming in from overseas or interstate they may be expecting to be fed considering they have paid for their own flights and accomodation to be at your wedding.

Comments on the woman’s Facebook post were varied. “Definitely bad manners to ask guests to pay for their own meal,” one person said.

“Oh no, that’s really rough asking people to pay for their own meals. Maybe you will have to save in another area to pay for the food.”

“If you’re inviting people, you should feed them. They also shouldn’t have to give a present as flights and accommodation just to get there is enough in my opinion,” one woman added.

Those that came to the bride’s defence said: “If anyone thinks it’s ‘rude’ or ‘bad manners’ then they don’t need to be included in your day. Those who love and understand you will understand your reasons for this.”
