Has Your Pet Given You a Surprise Like This? Boss’s Story
If there is one thing that we can be sure of in life, it’s that we never know what is just around the corner.
Take my hairdresser Jess’s recent experience, for example.
This is Boss, her nine month old Bull Mastiff.
Just look at that face? He’s a total spunk, right?
Last month, Jess and her husband had a bit of a scare, when Boss’s health took a totally unexpected turn for the worse.
It started with a runny nose, but since he was still eating and still his usual playful self, Jess and her husband didn’t think anything of it. At 4am when he got up to go to work Allen found Boss laying in his bed in his own vomit, and clearly struggling to breath.
Since their local vet didn’t offer an after hours service, Jess and her husband rushed their fur baby Boss to the nearest Animal Emergency Centre instead. Boss was examined and found to have a temperature of 40, in clear respiratory distress and with suspected pneumonia.
Poor Boss was in need of some serious medical attention. Jess and Allen were asked to pay an $800 deposit there and then and Boss was admitted.
Over the next 24 hours Boss, who was just 7 months old at the time, was put on intravenous antibiotics, given a series of blood tests and an x-ray and was given oxygen to help him breath easier.
It was suspected that Boss caught kennel cough (despite being fully vaccinated) which unfortunately developed into pneumonia, complicated by the fact that he also aspirated vomit into his lungs.
After 24 hours of treatment Boss’s temperature had returned to normal and he could breath again without oxygen – and after being monitored for a further 14 hours, a relieved Jess and Allen were told that they could take him home with medication for the next 3 days.
Their relief was marred by shock however, when they were presented with the bill for Boss’s 38 hour hospital stay. $2998 payable immediately. Follow up appointments with their local vet to monitor the pneumonia, and six weeks worth of antibiotics, amounted to further vet bills in excess of $1000.
Jess’s advice: Don’t assume that it won’t happen to you or your pet. When your beloved fur baby is sick, the absolutely last thing you want to worry about is whether you can afford treatment for them. The whole ordeal was stressful enough. Really, I can’t recommend getting pet insurance enough.
