Mummy Cupcakes Recipe
Whether you love it or loathe it Halloween is firmly grabbing a bigger and bigger hold on Australia every year. I am in the latter category as I was born and raised in Canada and it was my favorite day of the year. We would decorate the classrooms with pumpkins, cats and witches and it was a huge decision deciding what costume I would wear to go trick-or-treating with my Dad following close behind (probably not so much to keep me from being kidnapped but to ensure I had enough loot for him to rummage through when I went to bed).
I’ve lived in Australia now for over 30 years and was pretty sad to see it was a non-event to begin with but I have watched with great delight at its’ growing popularity and I can tell you we have thrown some EPIC Halloween parties at our house. I’ve imported zombies and ghouls and all sorts of grotesque creatures from overseas, I had a friend paint giant headstones for the ‘cemetery’ and I even have a life-size coffin not to mention the rats, cockroaches and fake blood that gets planted around the house. And then of course there is the ‘tunnel of doom’ that must be traversed by all the guests as they arrive full of fog and voice activated creatures.
So of COURSE I need to make any new and interesting Halloween treat that comes along and these cute Mummy Cupcakes that I spotted in the local free supermarket magazine looked perfect!
Just a packet cake mix, some tinted frosting and a bit of ready to roll icing (with mini M&Ms for eyes) is all that’s required to produce these not very scary but perfectly in theme cupcakes. I even gave some to my fellow Halloween-loving girlfriend yesterday for her birthday cake LOL.
Ingredients
1 packet of cake or cupcake mix
1 tub vanilla frosting (or make your own)
orange food colouring
1 small packet of white ready to roll icing
mini brown M&Ms
Method
Bake the cupcakes according to directions and allow to cool completely.
Tint the vanilla frosting with orange food colouring and frost the cakes.
Using a 7cm round cutter, cut out 12 circles and then slice them into 5 or 6 pieces and decorate your cakes to look like a mummy’s bandages with the eyes peeking out.
