Schapelle Could Be Released By The Weekend

Few people are known only by their first name – Beyonce, Madonna…and Schapelle. Few Australian women have been subjected to so much scrutiny from people she has never met. Yet the public fascination endures, as do debates on her innocence or guilt. Regardless, Schapelle Corby’s future has always been out of our hands and certainly out of hers. Despite this, it seems that Shapelle could be realeased by the weekend.

Corby was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in jail in Indonesia for importing 4.2kg of cannabis into Bali on October 8, 20o4, the drugs being concealed in a boogie board bag. She has always maintained her innocence and that the drugs were planted there, unknown to her, by someone else.

The Possibilty of Early Release for Shapelle Corby

It was announced today that Schapelle may be released from Kerobokan Prison, where she has been detained for nearly a decade, by the weekend. Indonesia’s Justice Minister, Amir Samsyuddin, announced at a press conference this afternoon that he would sign Corby’s parole papers within three days. He also said she would not receive any special treatment as there were 1700 other parole applications in the system.

Schapelle’s always outspoken Mother, Rosleigh Rose, has criticized Channel Nine’s upcoming telemovie saying she was appalled the State Government had provided a grant of $567,000 for the project.

Schapelle herself is keeping sensibly quiet and, no doubt, remaining hopeful but philosophical; until she actually walks through the gates of Kerobokan Prison and to the relative freedom of being a parolee.

What do you think of Schapelle being released early? Has she spent enough time in prison? Should she serve her full term? Was 20 years for drug smuggling a reasonable sentence? Tell us your opinions.
