Emma Comfort Mattress Review

Emma Comfort Mattress Review

Considering that we spend roughly one third of our lives either sleeping, or attempting to do so, finding the right mattress is hugely important for our health and wellbeing. So, to say that I was excited when I was recently offered the opportunity to review an Emma Comfort mattress from Emma Sleep, is an understatement. I mean – it combines two of my most favourite things to do; review new products and sleep! Sign me up!

Besides the slightly annoying TV ad, I’ll confess, that up until this point, I wasn’t all that familiar with the Emma Sleep brand, so I was impressed to find out that they’ve won over 30 international awards, as well as being the Top Scoring Mattress 2021 and 2022 by CHOICE®. This means that it topped 35 competitors, and even knocked the Emma Original out of the first place following its 2020 win, and into the second spot.

What Makes the Emma Comfort Mattress Unique?

So, what makes the Emma Comfort mattress so unique when compared to other ‘mattress in a box’ brands? To understand this, we’ll need to take a closer look at how it’s been designed to support you while you sleep.

  1. Fresh Air Comfort Cover

The elastic Fresh Air cover hugs the Emma Comfort perfectly and prevents your mattress from sliding. The white top is made from a climate control fibre that regulates humidity and keeps moisture away.

  1. Point Elastic Airgocell

The ultra-comfy Airgocell layer is point-elastic which allows one area of your mattress to compress without impacting the rest. If you share a bed with someone who moves while they sleep, you won’t feel a thing. Airgocell foam is also moisture wicking to keep your sleep nice and dry.

  1. Supportive HRX Foam

The supportive HRX foam layer is made with a special zoning technology for proper hip, shoulder and spinal alignment. This innovative foam helps your mattress contour perfectly to your individual body shape. The foams’ open pores enhance breathability, so you sleep cool and fresh.

  1. Bottom Covers and Handles

The grey bottom ensures perfect air circulation, so you breathe easy all night long. Plus, it features handles for easy set up.

First impressions of the Emma Comfort Mattress

As expected, the Emma Comfort mattress arrived vacuum sealed in a box. If you’ve only ever previously bought regular spring mattresses, it can be quite a shock to see how small foam mattresses can be compacted. But, honestly, don’t let it put you off. Once you get them out of their wrapping and they inflate to their intended size you’ll realise just how comfy and supportive they can be!

The Emma Sleep Mattress came with a nifty little device that made cutting through the plastic seal without damaging the mattress a breeze. One thing that I would recommend is opening the bedroom windows when you do this, due to the ‘new mattress smell’ or what’s known as ‘off-gassing.’ Most mattresses that come in a box have some off-gassing when they are first unboxed due to the VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). Whilst it’s not exactly unpleasant, it can be quite strong for people who are sensitive to odours. However, the smell had completely disappeared 24-48 hours later.

My Verdict

When fully inflated the mattress is 25 cm thick, which is the regular size for a mattress, and it feels amazing. Emma Sleep listened to feedback from customers and made the Emma Comfort a little firmer than the Emma Original, although it’s still in the medium-firm range, rating 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The zoned memory foam keeps your spine, hips, and shoulders aligned and supported in every possible position. I’m generally a side sleeper which can mean I often wake up with lower back pain, feeling as though I’ve twisted wrong in the night. But after sleeping on the Emma Comfort mattress for the last month I haven’t been aware of any lower back ache in the morning upon waking. Now, that’s a result!

Compared to my old mattress, one feature of the Emma Comfort mattress that my husband and I have really noticed is the zero-motion transfer. As a fairly-light sleeper, I tend to wake easily in the night if my husband is having one of those dreams that make you twitch and jerk about. Similarly, once a month, depending on my menstrual cycle, I always seem to have one really restless night of sleep. I fidget about, trying to get comfortable for what feels like hours on end, before eventually dropping off to sleep. Since sleeping on the Emma Comfort mattress, we haven’t been waking each other with our weird, and annoying nocturnal activities!

The other thing I really love is the removable cover, that can be machine washed. How many times have you had a child throw up, or wee, or spilled a coffee on the bed and tried to scrub at the mattress trying to get the stain out? With the Emma Comfort mattress you can just whip the cover off, bung it in the washing machine and hang it on the line to dry. I live in Queensland, so it was dry within a couple of hours and ready to go back on the bed. The top white cover has a lovely plush feeling too, and keeps you cool and stops you from overheating in the bed, and the brown bottom cover also features traction elements on the underside so that it doesn’t move around on the bed frame.

Emma Sleep is committed to delivering world-class mattress engineering and award-winning comfort at unbeatable prices, and on both counts they do not disappoint. Although, when it comes to personal preference, how comfortable a mattress is can be very subjective, I wouldn’t think twice about recommending the Emma Comfort mattress to my friends and family. I’ll be upgrading my boys’ bedrooms in the next year or two, and won’t hesitate to purchase from Emma Sleep now that I know the quality and comfort they offer, and at such an affordable price. If you are in need of a new mattress, you don’t need to just take my word for it. They offer a 100-night risk-free trial with free delivery, and free collection if you choose not to keep it, so you can try it for yourself in the comfort of your own home. You can’t say fairer than that, can you?
